All,
There was a small turnout for the Birdwalk at the Wilna Unit of the
Rappahannock River Valley, NWR. Six of us in all, but is was still a great
birdwalk. We recorded 40 species of birds in just over 2 hours of walking,
covering 1.5 miles (ebird's 1 way miles).
Some of the highlights, we started the walk down by the pond. While
wondering aloud where the kingfisher might be, he made an appearance as if
to say, "Right here!"
On our return to the parking lot a Great Crested Flycatcher, was
observed on a few cars. The last one laying down, like a bird on a nest,
to grab the warmth. We continued up the trail and into the woods. Many
birds were observed or heard along the path, an Eagles soaring with
Vultures, a Coopers Hawk, Summer Tannager and Red and White Eyed Vireos.
After the walk, while leaving a Barred Owl buzzed Leslie's Car and
landed in a tree just into the woods. When I got out of my van to get a
better look, he retreated a bit further into the woods, although there was
still an unobstructed view till it finally flew off. Thanks to all who
showed up and look forward to seeing everybody on the August Walk.
I am currently trying to line up bird walls for next year. If you
have a favorite spot and would like to share it, please let me know.
Especially important would be the time of year to explore.
