HUGHLETT POINT & DAMERON MARSH BIRD WALK MARCH 9 On Monday March 9, the Northern Neck Audubon Society will conduct a bird walk led by Frank Schaff at Hughlett Point and Dameron Marsh Natural Area Preserves in Northumberland County. Both preserves lie on peninsulas jutting into the Chesapeake Bay. Hughlett Point offers a wonderful opportunity for viewing birds and wildlife as it includes coastal forest, shrub, salt marsh, and sandy beach habitats and a viewing platform. Dameron Marsh offers views of the Chesapeake Bay, Mill Creek and Ingram Bay. It also has a viewing platform, sand beaches, marshes and a large fallow field with scattered shrubs. This is prime time for viewing waterfowl. Among possible sightings are scaups, old squaws, canvas backs, loons, horned grebes, golden eyes. surf scoters, gannets, wigeons, tundra swans, ruddy ducks, buffleheads, mergansers, long-tailed ducks, gulls, terns and bald eagles. The group will meet at 1:00 p.m. at Shiloh School, an historical one room school house built in 1906. Shiloh School is located at the intersection of Shiloh School and Balls Neck Roads. Carpools will leave Grace Episcopal Church in Kilmarnock at 12:30 p.m. Directions for those driving directly are as follows: From Burgess, take Rt. 200 south. Go approximately 8 miles and turn left (east) on Shiloh School Road (Rt. 606). Shiloh School will be on the left in a mile and a half. From Kilmarnock, take Rt. 200 north. Go approximately 5 miles and turn right (east) on Shiloh School Road (Rt. 606). Shiloh School will be on the left in a mile and a half.
