If you view the above documentary, it is worth reflection how much we take for
granted both the geological wonder and as Brett noted the value of active
citizen engagement when we ride around and through the Great Swamp. I was
impressed to learn that much of the land we ride past, Hartley Farms on Spring
Valley Road, Giralda Farms and Green Village were as recently as the 1930's
part of a vast Dodge Estate owned by Marcellus Hartley Dodge and his wife
Geraldine thus combining a Rockefeller and Remington arms and munitions
fortunes. The Madison Town hall complex that we admire was a gift a Geraldine
Dodge. I believe in memory of one of her sons who died in an automobile.
