These are desperate times for many people, some of whom need our help to
stay alive.
Many psychologists, counselors, physicians, and other professionals are
volunteering to help those in need.
Today I updated and expanded a web page to help professionals find
volunteer opportunities that match your interests, values, and available
time.
The web page provides links to and brief descriptions of diverse projects
seeking volunteers.
The projects range from one end of the continuum -- e.g., those asking only
a few hours of your time on a one-time-only basis with no further
commitment or one hour per week in your own office providing therapy -- to
the continuum's other end -- e.g., those involving relatively short trips
or longer stays in another country.
You can give important professional services online, e.g., through the
United Nation's program in which professionals communicate online with
grassroots organizations, international NGOs, local governments,
educational institutions, and United Nations agencies to help meet
developmental challenges.
The resources include:
1) national programs in the U.S. (e.g., United We Serve, RSVP, Red Cross,
programs for returning veterans and their families, National Social Justice
Initiative);
2) programs focusing on other countries, continents, or areas (e.g.,
Psychology Beyond Borders; Doctors Without Borders, Counselors Without
Borders, Info Nepal, Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos, Teach With Africa,
SalusWorld, International Rescue Committee);
3) organizations that match individuals looking to volunteer with agencies
and projects seeking volunteers (e.g., Health Care Volunteer, AAAS "On
Call" Scientists, International Health Volunteer, Volunteer Match, Global
Volunteer Network); and
4) local programs (e.g., Haight Ashbury Free Clinics & Walden House in San
Francisco; Greater Victoria Citizens' Counselling Centre in Victoria; The
Ark in Chicago; Fremont Community Therapy Project in Seattle; Walk-In
Counseling Center in Minneapolis; & Volunteers in Psychotherapy in
Hartford).
