Dear Allies and Friends, I hope you are having a good Thanksgiving weekend.
Whenever we have Thanksgiving, I always think about the Native Americans and
their contributions and sacrifices for this country. If you feel similarly,
please consider doing the following action in support of the Native Americans
in our country:Kani, Sophia Wilansky is fighting to save her arm after being
attacked so brutally by Morton County officers at Standing Rock on Sunday night
that she faces a possible amputation. She asked us to remember this is not
about her, but about the indigenous people of our country.
Hundreds of tribal nations stand with the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to fiercely
protect the Missouri River from contamination by the Dakota Access pipeline.
They have been attacked by dogs, shot by rubber bullets, blasted with water in
freezing temperatures, tear gassed and more. Law enforcement is willfully
endangering their lives to protect oil profits while people suffer.
Call the Army Corps of Engineers and tell them pull the permits for DAPLand
stop this project before someone is killed. Here are the numbers and a sample
script:
Army Corps of Engineers phone numbers:
Main: 202-761-0011, press 9
Regulatory (permits) office: 202-761-5903
Hello, my name is ________. I'm calling from {city, state, county}. It is your
duty to pull the permits for the Dakota Access pipeline immediately. Police are
violently attacking peaceful water protectors, putting their lives in danger by
blasting them with water cannons in freezing cold weather. You must stop this
pipeline now. It is dangerous in the long term, but right now, this very second
it is a threat to the lives at Standing Rock. After your call, fill out this
form to tell us how the call went. Tell us how the Army Corps responds to your
calls.
As you prepare to observe (or not observe) the Thanksgiving holiday, please
don't forget about the original people of this land. Indigenous people are
putting their lives on the line to protect the land stolen from them, the water
they drink, and their sacred sites.
The least we can do is stand with them, and call on the Army Corps of
Engineers. I don’t know if you have seen this article already, but I found it
worth

We will see what happens with the vote audits. I hope that it is helpful. At
the very least, it sends a message that we, as a country, will not sit idly by
when racism and sexism wins. Here are some actions you can do if you are
interested:Stand with Rep. Cummings: Investigate Trump's massive web of
potential corruption. Click here to sign the petition. Now is the time for the
postcard avalanche to stop Bannon, a white supremacist. I have attached the
instructions below if you are interested in participating: I have been
struggling trying to understand how to interact with and emotionally respond to
the Trump supporters in my life, people who ignored his hateful rhetoric and
voted for him. Their votes have emboldened racists and sexists to act on their
inhumane beliefs and wound others, including people whom I love. These are some
quotes that gave me solace and encouragement at this difficult time:
“Ultimately evil is done not so much by evil people, but by good people who do
not know themselves and who do not probe deeply.”
― Reinhold Niebuhr “The chief source of man's inhumanity to man seems to be
the tribal limits of his sense of obligation to other men.” Reinhold Niebuhr
“Our dreams of bringing the whole of human history under the control of the
human will are ironically refuted by the fact that no group of idealists can
easily move the pattern of history toward the desired goal of peace and
justice. The recalcitrant forces in the historical drama have a power and
persistence beyond our reckoning.” Reinhold Niebuhr “The history of mankind is
a perennial tragedy; for the highest ideals which the individual may project
are ideals which he can never realize in social and collective terms.” Reinhold
Niebuhr The final wisdom of life requires not the annulment of incongruity but
the achievement of serenity within and above it.
Reinhold Niebuhr The first duty of love is to listen.Paul Tillich All things
and all people, so to speak, call on us with small or loud voices. They want us
to listen. They want us to understand their intrinsic claims, their justice of
being. But we can give it to them only through the love that listens. Paul
Tillich One cannot be strong without love. For love is not an irrelevant
emotion; it is the blood of life. Paul Tillich Cruelty towards others is
always also cruelty towards ourselves. Paul Tillich “Nothing that is worth
doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope.
Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any
immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith. Nothing we
do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we must be saved by
love.
No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe
as it is from our standpoint. Therefore we must be saved by the final form of
love which is forgiveness.”Reinhold Niebuhr Genuine forgiveness is
participation, reunion overcoming the powers of estrangement. . . We cannot
love unless we have accepted forgiveness, and the deeper our experience of
forgiveness is, the greater is our love. Paul Tillich I still I am going to do
what I can to protest, but I will do my best to do so fueled primarily by
compassion.
Here is a beautiful and inspiring song to share (Sam Cooke's "A Change is gonna
come")https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEBlaMOmKV4
Take care, Kani
