Thank you, Maricarmen. These are helpful articles. I also love your ideas
about having respect added to the mission, and having NJCA do more position
press releases.
You mentioned that NJCA is looking into doing some meetings remotely. I am
curious if anyone in NJAMC would be more interested or available if we were to
do some of our meetings remotely? So, members reading this message, please
chime in!
Thank you for all of your work on behalf of NJAMC.
Jennie

Subject: Update on NJAC board meeting of 7/9/16, invaluable article +
announcement
Dear sisters and brothers:
1) Invaluable article and a link:
Given the recent heartbreaking incidents involving citizens Mr. Alton Sterling
and Mr. Phillander Castille whose interactions with police officers ended in
their unnecessary death, the heartbreaking killings of police officers in
Dallas at the hand of an African American veteran, and the continued public
protests that are being held in major cities in the United States against
police brutality, I wanted to share an article written by Kevin Matthews. I
also recommend Dr. Michael Stone from Columbia University who has studied the
demographic characteristics of those who kill police officers since 2013. You
can find this article here:
www.newsweek.com/who-kills-police-officers-315701<http://www.newsweek.com/who-kills-police-officers-315701>.
[Dr. Stone's study was reviewed by reporter Max Kutner on 3/21/2015].
2) Most recent board meetings:
As I have done before, from time to time, I brief you on my participation at
the NJCA board meetings.
I had the honor and privilege of representing you at two board meetings held in
most recent days. The 1st meeting was on June 11, 2016 at the Galloping Hill
Golf conference center and the 2nd one was held yesterday (7/9/16) held at the
Cope Center in Montclair. On the June meeting, the highlight of the meeting
was the change of leadership for NJCA with Randy Clark finishing his terms and
Connie S. Ducaine starting her term as new president. She announced that she
wants to start by having a meeting to go over important policies and procedures
with all executive council members and presidents of active divisions.
Yesterday, this meeting took place which gave those invited to participate
face-to-face or via telephone mode. Connie plans to continue exploring new
technologies such as virtual ways of communication so that certain meetings can
be held face to face and a certain number can be held remotely. She also
mentioned that she would like to cut down on expenses related to food so that
dollars saved in these items may go for direct services to members. We went
over all key documents that divisions need to present for various record
keeping purposes. Although guests were asked to read the NJCA bylaws, the
allotted time ran out and the bylaws were not discussed. Finally, I suggested
that the organizational mission be revisited to update it. I offered a
suggestion so that the current mission adds the value of respect for the
profession to the sentence considering that this is one salient challenge
confronted by NJCA.
This is the current NJCA mission:
NJCA is dedicated to advancing the counseling profession through the
professional development of counselors and counseling students, and expanding
public recognition and awareness of the profession.
My suggested change was that the statement may read this way: "NJCA is
dedicated to advancing the counseling profession through the professional
development of counselors and counseling students, expanding public
recognition, respect, and awareness of the profession."
My thoughts on how the profession gains the respect that so rightfully
deserves: creating a regular presence on TV, radio and social media when issues
that matter to the general public happen and when people are confused when
coping with life stressors/changes. For example, after all the public
incidents of citizens losing their lives because of the excessive force of some
police officers, representatives from NJCA need to post comments about our
position on these issues and any suggestions we may have that would help
citizens deal with their pains and fears related to these stressors and
injustices.
As a start, let's explore how NJCA may send a spokesperson to network with WADO
or Univision Al Despertar newscasts in the NJ area. These two sources of
information are extremely popular with the Latino population in NJ and the
entire tri-state area. These two sources of information regularly invite
psychiatrists and social workers. There are many good reasons why LPCs can be
invited and offer their expertise given our developmental/preventive and
remediative perspectives on meaningful issues faced by clients and families.
3) Newark's public demonstration on Monday 7/11/16 at 4:30 pm:
The People Organization for Progress is having a public demonstration tomorrow
Monday 7/11/16 at 4:30 pm in Newark in protest for the deaths of Mr. Alton
Sterlin , Mr. Phillander Castille. The meeting point is at 465 MLK Boulevard
(corner of Martin Luther King Boulevard and Springfield Avenue in Newark).
There is landmark there. the statue of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. POP is an
organization that has always represented the interests of the citizens of NJ
who confront issues of injustice and discrimination. Its leader Mr. Lawrence
Hamm worked and marched with Dr. King in Washington mobilizations during the
1960s.
Respectfully submitted by:
