The New York-based Human Rights Watch has strongly criticised what it describes as Israel's discriminatory allocation of child benefits. A new Israeli budget had cut by almost a quarter, child allowances for those who have not served in the army. Human Rights Watch said Arab children, whose families are exempt from military service, will bear the brunt of the cuts. The organisation said Arab children are the poorest in Israel and the proposed cuts would worsen the inequalities even further. The move is part of the government's plans to reduce its spending. On Thursday four Arab members of the Israeli parliament, the Knesset, appealed to the High Court to try to cancel the cuts to the child benefits.
