Israel refuses to cooperate with UN

The Israeli cabinet last night voted to refuse cooperation with a UN
fact-finding mission charged with visiting the war-torn Palestinian refugee
camp of Jenin, and warned it would try to block any visit by the team, Israeli
army radio said.
The vote came after a marathon cabinet meeting to discuss whether to give the
green light to the UN mission and despite Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's
proposal of a 24-hour delay on any decision.
The government decided the terms for the mission's mandate had not yet been
clearly defined to allow the team's entry into Jenin.
Israeli officials say they fear the team's mission could be used as an excuse
to open legal proceedings against Israeli leaders for the army's destruction of
large parts of the Jenin camp in a pitched nine-day battle earlier this month.
The UN team, which had assembled in Geneva, earlier today cancelled its
scheduled flight departure, a Swiss airport source said
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan had said he expected the visit to begin today,
more than a week after the UN Security Council approved a probe into the
fighting at Jenin.
The Palestinians say hundreds of residents, mainly civilians, were massacred at
the camp.
But Israel denies the charges, insisting that about 50 Palestinians, mostly
gunmen, were killed during the worst fighting in Israel's month-long blitz
across the West Bank.
