Firms fail to hire security staff with formal qualifications

Britain's Department of Trade and Industry's latest Information Breaches Survey
finds that only 10% of British businesses and 25% of large companies have
security staff with such professional qualifications as CISSP (Certified
Information Security Systems Professional) and CISM (Certified Information
Security Manager); only 42% have any staff with professional information
technology qualifications. However, the threats to business have increased over
four years--68% of companies have experienced a security breach, up from 24% in
2000. The average cost of the worst breach ranges from £50,000 to £150,000. The
lack of skilled security professionals may explain the lack of businesses
familiar with security standard BS7799. Only 12% of businesses, and 39% of
large businesses were familiar with the standard. 90% of companies that have
implemented BS7799 said it improved business continuity, 85% said it minimized
damage from security incidents, and 53% said it led to a higher return on
investment.
