In these unsettling times, it is more important than ever that educators,
parents, and community organizations work together to help young people
develop the critical skills of "emotional intelligence": managing emotions,
resolving conflict nonviolently, and respecting differences.

IV. New Social and Emotional Learning Resources

* The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL)
has released a new report, "Safe and Sound: An Education Leader's Guide to
Evidence-Based Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Programs." The guide
provides educators with objective information about nationally available
programs that teach core social and emotional competencies. Details include
costs, grades covered, and measures of effectiveness for 80 SEL programs.
The research underlying the report was conducted over three years and
covered 250 programs. The guide is available for free from the CASEL Web site.

* Educators for Social Responsibility (ESR) has created a set of online
lesson plans, "Understanding World Events," to help teachers address
national and global issues constructively with their students. These free
resources are available from the ESR Web site.

* The National Association of School Psychologists has materials and tips
for helping children to cope in unsettling times.
