Medical Research Firms Offer Wealth of Information <http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4401201/> Providing access to information "Medical libraries have volumes and volumes of information, but the public generally doesnt have access to it. What the research companies do is condense that information into a simple packet that patients can understand. Dr. Alan Rosenbach, who practices dermatology in Los Angeles, thinks medical research services will be a major boon to physicians as well as patients. I see a sea change in the future where physicians will have access to this sort of information even more immediately than it is available currently, and that will help patients a lot, says Rosenbach." WOW, I never realized that medical information was this hard to find. If I had known that medical information was this hard to find, I would have never posted the message from the librarian in India who was generous enough to create an extensive list of medical journals that are available full text on the interne for free. Dillard" <jwne@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Date: Sat Feb 7, 2004 10:21 pm Subject: MEDICAL: PERIODICALS: New Electronic Medical Journals <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NetGold/message/1160> I would have also refrained from sharing the various posts of which there are more to come from "Soundara Rajan N.S" <searchlight@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> that provide links to specific valuable medical journals that are online free. A search of the NetGold archives with the keyword Rajan will find these messages along with all the other posts that he has shared, great to have a columnist for the Deccan Herald as a member of NetGold. Indeed that there is a constant stream of new journals and magazines on the internet in all subject areas including medicine and biology is well documented in the source cited here. From: "David P. Dillard" <jwne@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Date: Wed Oct 22, 2003 10:52 pm Subject: BIOLOGY: PERIODICALS: Public Library of Science (PLOS): Biology <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NetGold/message/528> Dr Donald Leon shared yet another important source of medical information from the United States Federal Government. From: "Dr. Donald Leon, PhD" <drdleonphd@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Date: Thu Aug 14, 2003 10:55 am Subject: FDA ACTIONWATCH - VOLUME I, ISSUE 48, AUG. 14, 2003 <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NetGold/message/94> In addition to all of these NetGold posts that lack all sense of awareness of the barriers to finding and using the medical information locked securely in the impenetrable vaults refered to as medical libraries, here are some other internet resources that need to be monitored for lack of awareness that they need to improve greatly in the area of lack of accessibility. The Free Medical Journals Site <http://www.freemedicaljournals.com/> PUBMED <http://www.ncbi.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi> "PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine, includes over 14 million citations for biomedical articles back to the 1950's. These citations are from MEDLINE and additional life science journals. PubMed includes links to many sites providing full text articles and other related resources." [These PUBMED folks are among the leading culprits of unawareness of the impossiblity of finding medical information, and to have the nerve to make a database out of this resource so that people can pinpoint information about a specific complex topic. We will need to get NBC on their case right away.] Medscape <http://www.medscape.com/px/urlinfo> Specialty Home Pages Allergy & Clinical Immunology Cardiac Rhythm Management Cardiology Critical Care Dermatology Diabetes & Endocrinology Family Medicine Gastroenterology Hematology-Oncology HIV/AIDS Infectious Diseases Internal Medicine Molecular Medicine Neurology & Neurosurgery Ob/Gyn & Women's Health Oncology Ophthalmology Orthopaedics Pediatrics Pharmacotherapy Primary Care Psychiatry & Mental Health Public Health & Prevention Pulmonary Medicine Radiology Rheumatology Surgery Transplantation Urology Women's Health These people even let one subscribe to email updates that list and link to new full text articles in the field of medicine. Medline Plus <http://medlineplus.gov/> Health Topics Drug Information Medical Encyclopedia Dictionary News Directories Other Resources What is worse is the MEDLINE PLUS folks try to make this medical information understandable to consumers and average folks. NBC will have its work cut out setting these people straight. Horrors, they even try to make average people feel welcome and at home using their site. "Welcome to MedlinePlus, a goldmine of good health information from the world's largest medical library, the National Library of Medicine. Health professionals and consumers alike can depend on it for information that is authoritative and up to date. MedlinePlus has extensive information from the National Institutes of Health and other trusted sources on over 650 diseases and conditions. There are also lists of hospitals and physicians, a medical encyclopedia and a medical dictionary, health information in Spanish, extensive information on prescription and nonprescription drugs, health information from the media, and links to thousands of clinical trials. MedlinePlus is updated daily and can be bookmarked at the URL: medlineplus.gov. There is no advertising on this site, nor does MedlinePlus endorse any company or product. I hope you enjoy your visit and find the information you need. I invite you to use the link at the top of every page to send us your comments." <http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/aboutmedlineplus.html> Medical Encyclopedia from Medline Plus <http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/encyclopedia.html> Additional Free Sources of Medical Information include these valuable sources. WHO: World Health Organization <http://www.who.int/en/> HighWire: Library of the Sciences and Medicine <http://highwire.stanford.edu/> The Merck Manuals <http://www.merck.com/pubs/> Handbooks of medical information on a wide range of medical subjects with substantial content available free on the internet. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) <http://www.niaid.nih.gov/default.htm> Free Medical Journals : PubMed Search Hardin MD <http://www.lib.uiowa.edu/hardin/md/ej.html> AMEDEO, The Medical Literature Guide <http://amedeo.com/> But the conspriracy to provide free medical information does not end here, and I had just gotten to the first few items in a list of almost 13,000 listings of free medical resources with a search not designed to get at the various types of these sources and hence quite incomplete in its list of free resources. The public libraries are also co-conspirators. They subscribe to databases that cover popular medical and health journals that are written so that the public can understand their medical discussions and what is worse, library users can use these databases at home and read whole articles in these databases in the comfort of the room where they keep their computer. [I am using the Free Library of Philadelphia list of databases, database sources will vary in other areas.] Clinical Pharmacology from EBSCO Host EBSCOhost Expanded Academic Index General Science Full Text Health and Wellness Resource Center Health Source: Consumer Edition (EBSCOhost) Health Source:Nursing/Academic Edition (EBSCOhost) netLibrary Newspaper Source (EBSCOhost) Physicians' Desk Reference (PDR) Online Professional Development Collection PsycARTICLES After carefully reviewing the resource list above, I have come to two conclusions. First, medical information is not inaccessable and locked in library vaults. Secondly, while many thought that the MS in MSNBC was an acronym for Microsoft, I have now after reading the article at the top of this post, come to the conclusion that it is an abbreviation for the word missed. For those who need medical information and cannot afford to spend a huge sum of money to get it, the above links are just some part of the wealth of information that is available at no cost to those who wish to view it.
