************************************************************** Net Happenings - From Educational CyberPlayGround ************************************************************** In the latest blow to the US Interior Department for its alleged poor handling of American Indian trust accounts, the US District Court for the District of Columbia has mandated a historical accounting of trust assets back to 1887. The Interior Department had been hoping to only have to reconstruct transactions back to the 1980s. The decision is considered a major victory for the plaintiffs. "This is a landmark victory," said Elouise Cobell, the lead plaintiff in the case. "It is now clear that trust law and trust standards fully govern the management of the Individual Indian Trust." The ruling specifies that the accounting must be completed by 2007. In January, the Interior Department estimated that such an accounting would cost nearly $335 million.
