Write to the Presidential "Moon to Mars" Commission
February 23, 2004:

The Presidential Moon to Mars Commission, charged with making recommendations
for the future of the U.S. space program, is inviting public comments through
its website at http://www.moontomars.org/notices/contact.asp. We encourage The
Planetary Society's members and friends to write to the committee on the
importance of a human mission to Mars and space exploration in general.

The Moon to Mars Commission was established by President Bush following his
speech of January 14, in which he set new goals and priorities for NASA. The
new Presidential initiative calls for a return of humans to the Moon by 2015,
followed by a manned mission to Mars. The commission will investigate the best
ways of achieving these goals, and make its recommendations to the President.

The Planetary Society is well represented in the Moon to Mars Commission.
Commission member Neil deGrasse Tyson, director of the Hayden Planetarium in
New York City, is also the Vice President of The Planetary Society, and
commission member Maria Zuber, professor of geophysics and planetary science at
MIT, is a member of the Society's Board of Directors. The Society's most
important influence, however, is through our members and friends writing the
Commission and urging it to keep the dream of human space exploration alive.

"The Commission needs to understand that public interest in the exploration of
other worlds is high -- not just in the United States but everywhere on Earth"
said Louis Friedman, Executive Director of The Planetary Society. "This is one
of the great enterprises of our civilization. We urge members of The Planetary
Society particularly, but everyone, to send comments to the Commission citing
the strong need for a program of robotic and human missions that makes steady,
continuous progress towards the goal of sending humans to Mars. Members can
cite statements from The Planetary Society's human spaceflight website."
