A Utah man tied to the state's Republican party has been arrested on
charges that he raped four women.

Gregory Nathan Peterson, 37, was booked Wednesday on 23 felony counts,
including rape and kidnapping. Two of the alleged victims claim the
incidents took place at Peterson's cabin, where he has hosted a number of
fundraisers featuring Utah's most prominent politicians. Peterson's bail
has been set at $750,000.

Peterson allegedly held the girl hostage at his cabin overnight and
sexually assaulted her. The next day, he took her to his mother's house in
Lewiston, Cache County, where she was held hostage for two days and
repeatedly assaulted, according to court documents.

Two other women allege that Peterson sexually assaulted them at their
residences following dates coordinated online.

The rape and kidnapping charges are first-degree felonies that could carry
life sentences.

Talking Points Memo dug into Peterson's Facebook page and discovered that
his profile picture features him standing beside presumptive GOP
presidential nominee Mitt Romney. Another of Peterson's photos displays an
invitation to a Romney fundraiser that he co-chaired back during the
Republican's 2008 campaign for president.

Gregory Nathan Peterson, an active fundraiser for conservative politicians
in Utah, was charged Wednesday with a number of violent crimes, including
21 charges of rape, forcible sexual abuse and battery, two charges of
aggravated kidnapping, one charge of assault and one charge of felony
burglary, court documents reveal.

The charges stem from alleged attacks on four women between March 2011 and
April 2012. Two of the alleged attacks occurred at the cabin where
Peterson, 37, held political fundraisers.

One woman listed in an affidavit filed by the Salt Lake City DA's office
says she met Peterson at a church activity, where he invited her to see a
movie. However, she alleges, Peterson drove in the opposite direction of
the theater, and told the woman he was taking her to his cabin in Heber,
in a neighboring county. He told her he had a gun, and hit her when she
rejected his sexual advances. Once at the cabin, the woman says Peterson
raped her throughout the night, and drove her to her car the next morning.

Peterson met the other three alleged victims online, according to court
papers. He took one of the women to his cabin, and then to his mother's
house; he allegedly raped her at both places. The other two women told
authorities Peterson raped them in their own homes.

"The allegations of these four women are more than sufficient for us to
move forward with charges against Peterson," Sim Gill, Salt Lake City
District Attorney, told ABC News.

Peterson has been active in fundraising for Utah Republican candidates for
years, including Sens. Orrin Hatch and Mike Lee, Gov. Gary Herbert, U.S.
Rep. Jason Chaffetz and others, The Salt Lake Tribune reports. He was
listed as an event chair for a 2007 Mitt Romney campaign event, held at
the Romneys' Utah home, and has donated thousands of dollars to Romney's
campaign. Peterson is a Nebraska native, and Brigham Young University
alum, ABC News affiliate ABC4 reports. He currently owns and operates
Peterson Wealth Management.

The cabin where the alleged rapes took place was the site of the Rocky
Mountain Conservatives Convention and Barbeque, which Peterson called the
"CPAC of the West," according to the Salt Lake Tribune. Last year, the
second year of the event, nearly 300 people attended.

News that a Utah Republican activist is accused of raping four women - two
of whom say they were taken to the Heber cabin where the man hosted major
political events - caused ripples of unease Thursday throughout the GOP.

Gregory Nathan Peterson has hobnobbed with the likes of Sens. Orrin Hatch
and Mike Lee, Gov. Gary Herbert, U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz, and candidates
such as 4th District congressional contender Mia Love.
.
But for the past 14 months, the 37-year-old Orem man allegedly has led a
double life as a serial date-rapist.
.
Peterson was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court in Salt Lake City
with 23 felony counts, including rape and kidnapping, and two
misdemeanors. A jail log indicates U.S. marshals arrested Peterson in his
cabin in Heber and booked him into the Salt Lake County jail. He remained
there Thursday in lieu of $750,000 bail.

The rape and kidnapping charges are first-degree felonies that carry
sentences of up to life in prison.

His first court appearance is set for Monday at 1:30 p.m. before Judge Ann
Boyden.

Peterson is a certified financial planner and the owner of two Orem-based
companies - Peterson Wealth Management and Smartstocks.com, an online
trading website. He holds an MBA in finance and entrepreneurship from
Brigham Young University.

Chaffetz said there was a rumor circulating about inappropriate behavior
involving Peterson a few months ago, "but there was nothing ever of any
substance ... just pure gossip, and now I'm reading about it in the
newspaper."

"It's sad," Chaffetz said. "I worry about these women. We have an
obligation to take care of them. That should be priority one."

Peterson's Facebook page featured several photos of him with Republican
presidential candidate Mitt Romney, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Texas Rep.
Ron Paul and South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint.

Peterson has billed himself online as a "close personal friend of the
Romney family" and posted video on YouTube of Romney speaking at a 2007
fundraiser at Romney's home in Deer Valley. Peterson was listed as a
co-chairman of the fundraising event and he contributed $2,300 to the
Romney campaign that year. In addition, he posted several photos of
himself and Romney on his Facebook page.

In a 2011 audio podcast on the website LDS Liberty, Peterson was touted as
a volunteer organizer and fundraiser for the Romney campaign, who had
befriended Tagg and Josh Romney, Mitt's sons, at BYU, became friends with
the rest of the Romney family during the 2002 Winter Olympics and had been
in each of their homes.

But Chaffetz, who said he has been at most of the Romney events in Utah
during the past few years, said he never saw Peterson at any of them. "I
seriously doubt" he is close with the Romneys, Chaffetz said.
