Forget cramped commuter trains where weary travellers jostle for space and groan as the controller announces yet more delays, the Golden Eagle Luxury Train company, which operates at the super-premium end of the market, promises that a stint on board its locomotives will be the voyage of a lifetime.

.

The companys luxury carriages are to the humble train what private jets are to budget carriers. The cabins are so spacious that they boast a double bed and ensuite bathroom. With prices starting at 800 per person per day, its an exclusive train experience the top-price suites feature underfloor heating in a wider travel market where prices have been driven down by cheap operators, such as Megabus and Ryanair.

.

Its 13 packages include the Silk Road route from Moscow to Beijing, and a trip up to the Arctic Circle to watch the Northern Lights. Golden Eagle was also the first private Western train to launch a route into Iran. All alcohol is offloaded at the border and passengers are dry for six days.

.

Its bizarre when Iranians drink like fish, but tourists get clobbered because they dont have the facility to obtain alcohol, says Tim Littler, who founded the business 25 years ago. The Iranians just call a number and its delivered to the door. We cant do that, but the alcohol is reloaded when we get to the other side of the country.

.

The companys most popular route is the Trans-Siberian line, which runs from Moscow to Vladivostock. Golden Eagle is the operator of Russias only luxury private train, launching the route in 1996 with 72 steam engines provided by the Russian government. The two-week trip crosses eight time zones, taking in incredible scenery from Lake Baikal, the worlds deepest freshwater lake, to the Mongolian steppes, while a pianist plays Tchaikovsky in the bar car.

.

Working with officials in the Kremlin and the Russian Railways company has been straightforward, according to Littler, as has sourcing food, bedding and other supplies from 59 local Russian suppliers. We just ask and they say 'yes, he says. Relations became more strained last year when fighting erupted in Ukraine. Putins stand-off with the West has affected bookings, he admits. His Crimean adventure has undermined the business, but were lucky that Vladimir Yakunin, one of Putins closest confidantes and the head of the nations railways, is very supportive of our train.
