Classic Locomotive to Grace Virginia Rails Once More

The red carpet will be rolled out today in downtown Roanoke to celebrate
the return of a venerable old friend - the J Class 611 steam locomotive.

Built in 1950 in Roanoke by Norfolk & Western Railway - a predecessor of
Norfolk Southern Railway - the 611 has spent the past year undergoing
restoration work at the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer,
N.C.
.
The sole survivor of 14 Class J locomotives (numbers 600-613) built at
Norfolk & Western's East End Shops between 1941 and 1950, the locomotive
has spent most of its time since retiring in 1959 at the Virginia Museum
of Transportation in Roanoke.

Today, it'll arrive back home from Spencer pulling 18 cars, carrying about
500 people, including donors who helped pay for the restoration, city and
community leaders and members of the team of mechanics who helped bring
the 65-year-old locomotive back to life.

"We are expecting 20,000 people to descend on Roanoke tomorrow," said Peg
McGuire, spokeswoman for the Virginia Museum of Transportation, on Friday
afternoon. "And then we'll have about 10,000 lining the tracks from
Spencer, N.C., to Roanoke," a distance of roughly 150 miles.
