Two days after seven people were killed in an Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia, experts Thursday sharpened their probe into why the train was traveling more than twice the speed limit on a stretch of curving track.

.

Although the engineer applied the emergency brakes, it was not soon enough and the Washington-to-New York train careened off the rails into a jumble of wrenched metal, blown-out windows and bloodied survivors struggling through darkness trying to light their way with cell phones.

.

Even as the debris was gathered, questions mounted led by whether safety shortcomings contributed to the accident along the nations busiest rail corridor.

.

Investigators for the National Transportation Safety Board said there is technology available, known as Positive Train Control, that prohibits trains from exceeding speed limits. The system is in place in much of the Northeast Corridor, but Amtrak had not installed it on the section of track where the derailment happened.

.

Congress has mandated that the system be installed throughout the U.S. rail system by the end of this year.

.

Had such a system been installed on this section of track, this accident would not have occurred, said NTSB board member Robert Sumwalt.

.

Overnight, the fifth of seven passengers who were killed was identified: 42-year-old Derrick Griffith who was dean of student affairs at Medgar Evans College.

.

Amtrak service remained closed between New York and Philadelphia. Amtrak trains also will make fewer trips than normal between Washington and Philadelphia.

.

Among the other victims, according to family members: Rachel Jacobs, 39, of Philadelphia; a Naval Academy midshipman Justin Zemzer, 20, who was on leave and headed to his home in Rockaway Beach, N.Y., and Jim Gaines, 48, of Plainsboro, N.J., who worked for the Associated Press.
