UPDATE, 5/13/2015, 3 p.m.: At an afternoon press conference, Philadelphia
Mayor Michael Nutter said that the SEPTA and Amtrak Acela trains that were
struck within five miles and twenty minutes of the deadly Amtrak
derailment are unrelated to the crash. That may have been stones or rocks,
he responded when asked about reports of projectiles hitting the two
trains.

SEPTA officials have confirmed that an "unknown projectile" broke the
engineer's window on a SEPTA Regional Rail train on Tuesday night along
the same corridor as the deadly Amtrak crash. And according to a passenger
on the 8 p.m. Acela train from New York to Philadelphia, that train was
struck as well.

According to SEPTA, train number 769 was on its way to Trenton from
Philadelphia when an object hit the engineer's window, breaking it. After
the incident was reported, the train was held at the North Philadelphia
station.

Knowles, author of The Disaster Experts: Mastering Risk in Modern America,
tells Philadelphia magazine that he texted his wife at 9:16 p.m. on
Tuesday, explaining the problem to her. "My best guess is that it happened
at 9:08 p.m.," he says. "Because we were sitting there for at least a few
minutes before they told us what had happened, and then I didn't text my
wife immediately."

Another SEPTA spokesperson said that the incident occurred at the North
Philadelphia station, but Knowles maintains that it occurred somewhere
between 30th Street Station and the North Philadelphia Station.

Meanwhile, Washington resident Madison Calvert says that he was on an
Amtrak Acela train from New York to Philadelphia when it was struck by an
object, breaking his passenger window. Calvert says that the train left
New York a few minutes late and that it was minutes from arriving at
Philadelphia's 30th Street Station when his window shattered.

"It had to be between 9:05 and 9:10," he says. "It was a pretty big
impact.

Just before Tuesday's deadly Amtrak derailment, both a SEPTA commuter
train and another Amtrak train in the same corridor were hit by
projectiles, one which crashed through the engineer's window.

An Amtrak spokesman could not be reached regarding Amtrak Acela Train
2173, which passengers said was struck at about 9:05 p.m. A SEPTA train
was struck by a projectile at about 9:10 p.m., according to a SEPTA
spokeswoman, who said there is no indication the incident is connected to
the derailment, which happened at about 9:30 p.m.

Mayor Nutter, at a news conference Wednesday afternoon, reiterated that
the incident with the SEPTA train had "nothing to do" with the derailment.

Amtrak's Acela 2173 was traveling southbound when it was hit on the left
side between 9:05 and 9:10 p.m., about five minutes before it entered 30th
Street Station, according to 29-year-old passenger Madison Calvert.

"I just thought somebody might have thrown something at it," said Calvert,
who was sitting beside the window that was hit. "I had no idea. The window
didn't break through. But it shattered."

A commuter train traveling in the same corridor as the doomed Amtrak train
on Tuesday evening was hit by a projectile just minutes before the other
train crashed.

SEPTA spokeswoman Jerri Williams said on Wednesday that they do not know
what the projectile was, but it broke the engineer's window around 9.25pm
near SEPTA's North Philadelphia station.

An image shared by the company shows the driver's shattered windshield. No
injuries were reported in the incident and the train's 80 passengers were
transferred to buses.

SEPTA said there's no indication it is related to the derailment and on
Wednesday, Mayor Michael Nutter said it was likely just rocks or another
item thrown at the train.

Williams says the Trenton-bound commuter train was stopped and the
incident was being investigated when the Amtrak derailment happened about
3.5 miles away.

As news of the Amtrak derailment began to circulate through his halted
train, the mood in the rail car suddenly turned from irritation at the
extended delay to somberness. One woman was in hysterics, he said. Others
were glued to their phones and relaying new information out loud.

It was really weird. Something had struck the window, so we couldnt go
anywhere, and thats when reports starting coming in about a derailment,
Carbo said Wednesday.

At first it didnt seem like a big thing, but then the photos started
showing up on social media [and] thats when people started to realize that
had we kept going, our train could have been struck.

While reflecting on the incident Wednesday, he sent out the following
tweet:
