PHILADELPHIA Growing up in Memphis, Brandon Bostian, the engineer in the
fatal Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia this week, loved railroads so much
that he made a pilgrimage each Friday during high school to watch the
late-night City of New Orleans rumble through town.

He studied to be an accountant, but dreamed of becoming an engineer. And
when he became one, he brought with him an accountants focus on detail,
rules and avoiding risk.

When trains would run late, I would tease him about it, his friend James
Weir said in a phone interview. But he would say there is a lot to do to
make sure everything is safe on the train. Safety is his priority.

But friends say Mr. Bostian, 32, who lives in Forest Hills, Queens, was an
analytically minded man whose love for the rails they believe was matched
only by his concern for safety.

I talked to him the night of the accident after it had happened, said Mr.
Weir, who reached Mr. Bostian in a Philadelphia emergency room, where he
had one leg immobilized, stitches in the other and a concussion. There is
not a person in the world who feels as bad about this as Brandon.

In posts on the website Trainorders.com where train enthusiasts and
employees congregate a writer who used the handle bwb6df and signed many
of his posts as Brandon Bostian routinely chided railroad companies for
not doing more to prevent accidents, saying in one post that he found the
specter of human error frightening.

At Mr. Bostians apartment in Forest Hills, on Wednesday night, a neighbor,
Miriam Mierov, described him as a really sweet person.

Hes always polite, she said. He holds the elevator when he sees me.

Friends have posted encouraging words on Mr. Bostians Facebook profile in
the days after the crash. A friend whose profile said he was also an
engineer at Amtrak wrote of the crash, Yes, it happened to you but it
could have been any one of us and you are not alone.
