Philadelphia (CNN)Armed with flashlights, firefighters went from car to
car early Wednesday morning, looking for passengers inside an Amtrak train
that derailed and tipped over in Philadelphia -- killing at least five.
.
Another 50 were hospitalized, including six in critical condition,
authorities said.
.
"It is an absolute, disastrous mess," Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter of
the crash site. "I've never seen anything like this in my life."
.
The Amtrak Northeast Regional Train 188 was traveling from Washington to
New York when it derailed in the Port Richmond neighborhood of
Philadelphia about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The impact tore cars apart and left
the engine a mangled mess.
.
The northeast corridor, which spans from Washington to Boston, is the
busiest passenger line in the country, and the train was carrying 238
passengers and 5 crew members.
.
The cause wasn't immediately known.
.
snip
.
So far, there's nothing to indicate the incident was an act of terrorism.
.
Early Wednesday morning, investigators in orange vests walked up and down
the track, especially near a part where it curves.
.
The area of the crash is known as Frankford Junction. In 1943, it was the
site of one of the nation's deadliest train accidents when The
Congressional Limited crashed, killing 79 people.

PHILADELPHIA At least five people were killed and dozens more were
injured when an Amtrak train carrying 243 people derailed here on Tuesday,
shutting down service in the Northeast region, the authorities said.
.
The train was headed to New York from Washington when it derailed around
9:30 p.m., officials said during a news conference late on Tuesday.
Sixty-five people, including six who are now in critical condition, were
taken to hospitals, Philadelphias mayor, Michael Nutter, said.
.

Emergency workers carrying flashlights and ladders moved frantically from
car to car helping passengers off the train, some bloodied, others dazed.
.
The train had at least seven cars, including the engine, which separated
from the rest, officials said. Six cars overturned. At least one looked as
bent as a crumpled soda can, and parts of the damaged cars were so badly
mangled that firefighters had to use hydraulic tools to rescue the people
trapped inside.

from the rest, officials said. Six cars overturned. At least one looked as
bent as a crumpled soda can, and parts of the damaged cars were so badly
mangled that firefighters had to use hydraulic tools to rescue the people
trapped inside.
.
A steel utility pole had struck one of the cars, and a stretch of bent and
twisted track could be seen near the wreckage, signaling the sheer force
of the crash.
.
Amtrak identified the train as Northeast Regional Train 188 and said it
was carrying 238 passengers and five crew members. Most people were able
to walk away from the crash site, Mr. Nutter said, but officials would not
say whether all of the passengers and crew members had been evacuated.
.
We need to match up the manifest with all the individuals who walked off,
Mr. Nutter said.
.
After 1 a.m. on Wednesday, Mr. Nutter said officials had still not
accounted for everyone on board.
.
Injured passengers were taken from the scene in ambulances and on buses to
hospitals. Aria Health, which has two hospitals nearby, said it had
received 59 patients, including walk-ins. Maria Cerceo Slade, a
spokeswoman, said most of the patients had minor injuries.
.
Outside Temple University Hospital, doctors and nurses waited for
patients, who were rushed into the emergency room on stretchers and in
wheelchairs. A hospital spokeswoman said she was not able to provide a
patient count.

.
At Penn Station, where the train had been scheduled to arrive at 10:34
p.m., stranded passengers flanked an Amtrak help desk as an employee
repeated, Service is canceled indefinitely.
.
Amtrak employees said that New Jersey Transit would honor Amtrak tickets
to several nearby stations, including Trenton. Other passengers tried to
find alternate routes home on regional bus services like Megabus and
Boltbus.
.
Into the early morning, train cancellations piled up, not just from Amtrak
but also from New Jersey Transit and other services that use the same
section of track that is now mangled and destroyed.

PORT RICHMOND (WPVI) --
.
At least five people are dead after an Amtrak train derailed in the Port
Richmond section of Philadelphia.
.
Mayor Michael Nutter, who confirmed the deaths, said the scene was
horrific and not all of the more than 240 people on the train had been
accounted for.
.
"It is an absolute disastrous mess. Never seen anything like this in my
life," Nutter said during a press conference late Tuesday night along with
Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer and Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey.
.
There were approximately 238 passengers and 5 crew members on board when
the train derailed around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.
.
Officials say 65 people were hospitalized and transported to Temple
University Hospital, Area Health Torresdale, Jefferson University
Hospital, Hahnemann University Hospital, and Einstein Medical Center. Six
were critically injured.
.
15 SEPTA buses were sent in to aid the victims.
.
Nutter said all seven train cars, including the engine, were in "various
stages of disarray." He said there were cars that were "completely
overturned, on their side, ripped apart."
.
"It is a devastating scene down there," he said. "We walked the entire
length of the train area, and the engine completely separated from the
rest of the train, and one of the cars is perpendicular to the rest of the
cars. It's unbelievable."
.
The cause of the derailment was unknown, but Amtrak said it was
investigating and was trucking in portable lights to illuminate the scene
overnight as workers examined the wreckage.
.

.
An Associated Press manager, Paul Cheung, was on the train and said he was
watching Netflix when "the train started to decelerate, like someone had
slammed the brake."
.
"Then suddenly you could see everything starting to shake," he said. "You
could see people's stuff flying over me."
.
Cheung said another passenger urged him to escape from the back of his
car, which he did. He said he saw passengers trying to escape through the
windows of cars tipped on their side.
.
"The front of the train is really mangled," he said. "It's a complete
wreck. The whole thing is like a pile of metal."
.
Another passenger, Daniel Wetrin, was among more than a dozen people taken
to a nearby elementary school afterward.
.
"I think the fact that I walked off (the train) kind of made it even more
surreal because a lot of people didn't walk off," he said. "I walked off
as if, like, I was in a movie. There were people standing around, people
with bloody faces. There were people, chairs, tables mangled about in the
compartment ... power cables all buckled down as you stepped off the
train."
.
"Basically the train tilted over and rolled," one passenger told Action
News.

The Northeast Regional 188 service was carrying 243 people including five
crew when it went off the rails between Washington DC and New York City.
The front of the train was going into a turn when it started to shake,
according to passengers.
.
The Philadelphia mayor, Michael Nutter, said five people had been killed.
He described a disastrous scene after going down on to the tracks.
Authorities said another six people were critically injured and 65 taken
to hospital from the accident on what is a busy route between New York
City and the US capital.
.
Several passengers were trapped and the fire department had to use
hydraulics tools to get them out, according to officials. A secondary
search was under way for anyone else still inside.
.
snip
.
A fire department officer described a number of walking wounded and said
many of the passengers had been able to get out of the train by
themselves. Some people were loaded into police vans and transported to
hospitals, including Temple University hospital. As the emergency response
ramped up there were about 120 firefighters and 200 police officers on the
scene.
.
An Associated Press employee on the train said it went off the tracks.
Paul Cheung says he was fortunate to be at the back of the train and the
front of it looks pretty bad with numerous casualties.
.
Former congressman Patrick Murphy was on the train and said he helped
people. He tweeted photos of firefighters assisting passengers in the
wreckage.
.
Police swarming around the crash site in the Port Richmond area told
people to get back away from the train and give first responders room to
work. Roads all around the crash site were blocked off.
.
Several injured people, including one man complaining of neck pain, were
rolled away on stretchers. Others were unsteady on their feet while
walking away. An elderly woman was given oxygen.

At least 140 people were taken to area hospitals, Philadelphia Fire Chief
Derrick Sawyer said. Secondary searches were underway, which could lead to
a rise in the toll. "I've never seen anything so devastating," Sawyer
said.
.
Six cars of train 188 overturned. "We have train cars that are completely
overturned, on their side, ripped apart," Nutter said.
.
The derailment occurred before 10 p.m. on the 2000 block of Wheatsheaf
Lane in Philadelphia, according to officials.
.

.
"We were rolling along nice and smooth and then all of a sudden we were on
our side," passenger Don Kelleher told WCAU.
.
"All of a sudden it felt like the brakes were hit hard and then our car,"
passenger Michael Black said.
.
Video from the scene showed emergency crews with flashlights swarming the
crash site. A four-alarm response, approximately 120 firefighters and 200
police officers were responding to the derailment, according to WCAU. A
triage center has been setup, and buses are being used to transport
passengers from the scene.
