Football players will suffer the most head injuries this year followed by
hockey, soccer and lacrosse, which were #2, #3 and #4 on the list of
sports resulting in the most head injuries. Football-related injuries have
more than doubled over the last five years and helmet to helmet hits were
responsible for 65 percent of concussions reported.

During the 2010 season alone, concussion injuries are up in the NFL by 21
percent, which may be from more reporting of the injury. That is why the
NFL is penalizing hits to the head in an effort to deter these occurrences
and protect the athletes.

The real problem is if you have had one concussion, your chances of
experiencing another one are about 35 percent. Many of these player
injuries go unreported for various reasons.

Examples would be when a young athlete wants to continue playing or a
coach or trainer misses the signs of a concussion and is over-anxious to
have a star athlete return to the field. Some schools dont even have
trainers on staff.

The American College of Sports Medicine reported 300,000 concussions are
reported nationally from either sports or recreational activities
involving athletes 18 and under, which is about one in every four
athletes. They also believe 85 percent of concussions arent identified at
all. A study in the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine also found 66
percent of athletes didnt think their injuries were worthy of reporting.
