Lets start with what our bodies are bringing to the event (and Im going to skip carbo-loading as most of us arent competing, we are just exercising). Glycogen and fat our are two biggest energy storage units that we are willing to deplete. Im skipping breaking down muscle because most of us arent interested in that. Its been a long time since Ive heard my doctor tell me that Im just too muscular.

.

Glycogen is a polysaccharide stored in liver and muscle tissue. Polysaccharide is essentially a whole bunch of glucose linked together in chains. As soon as we start exercising and using up the glucose in our bloodstream our body starts to breakdown the glycogen to keep blood sugar levels up. Our bodies vary in the amount of glycogen we store, and it is something that can be increased just by doing strenuous exercise and eating carbohydrates afterward. But on average, we store enough glycogen to fuel us for more than two hours of sustained, moderate intensity exercise.

.

At the same time, our body is also always breaking down fat for energy (even at rest). Yes, you read correctly, it is a myth that in order to burn fat you must deplete your glycogen.

.

What does this mean in regard to ingesting energy-rich snacks? There are three essential questions that will help guide your decision:

.

Do you know when you are hypoglycemic?

.

Are you trying to lose weight?

.

Are you doing an exercise that requires significant endurance?

.

First things first, and this helps even if you arent exercising. Know when you are hypoglycemic. Some of these signs are subtle and can be partially masked by exercise in itself, such as sweating, fast heart rate, hunger, weakness. But other symptoms dont necessarily accompany exercise anxiety, nausea, irritability, confusion, blurred vision, tingling lips, fatigue and decreased coordination. My girlfriend is astute enough to sometimes say, Lets talk about this after youve had something to eat as I tend to let myself run low.

.

The treatment for hypoglycemia is simple carbohydrates (they arent all bad). This can be eaten in the form of an energy gel packet, or even just a couple tablespoons of raisins, or a tablespoon of honey. Hypoglycemia is far more common in diabetics because of their altered blood sugar metabolism, particularly in those using insulin.
