. SPORTS: FOOTBALL: PROFESSIONAL: Precise Under Pressure, Brees Completes His Quest Precise Under Pressure, Brees Completes His Quest By GREG BISHOP Published: February 8, 2010 New York Times <http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/08/sports/football/08brees.html>MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. This was the moment Drew Brees had longed for, the reason he came back from a shoulder injury so severe that doctors initially said it could not be repaired. This was for all the critics who said he was too short, for all the teams that passed on him as a free agent.
Mostly, this was for New Orleans, the city that adopted Brees, the place where he helped form a perfect union. Brees was the quarterback who desperately wanted to feel needed. New Orleans was the city destroyed in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the city that desperately needed help.
It culminated with 5 minutes 42 seconds remaining in Super Bowl XLIV on Sunday, with Brees throwing for another touchdown and cementing his Most Valuable Player status. Tight end Jeremy Shockey caught the ball, and after a successful 2-point conversion, the Saints led, 24-17, against the favored Indianapolis Colts.
Only quarterback Peyton Manning stood in the way of the perfect ending for the Saints. And when his pass fell into the waiting arms of cornerback Tracy Porter, Brees and the Saints could finally exhale. Four decades of disappointment had amazingly, improbably and unbelievably expired.
What started in 2006 when Brees signed with the Saints and rebuilt not only his shoulder but also his reputation and the city of New Orleans had an ending fit for Hollywood. The championship trophy felt lighter than Brees expected, but it shone, bright and polished, exactly as he dreamed it would.
Its unbelievable, Brees said, stammering to explain four years in a 15-minute news conference.
What got Bill Becknell was the trophy. Becknell served as ball boy on the first Saints team in 1967, worked in a number of positions and eventually became team counsel in 1976. Becknell is something of an unofficial team historian and has watched every quarterback in the history of this franchise. On Sunday, he cried tears of joy.
Im 60 years old, Becknell said. And because of Drew Brees, and these Saints, I can die happy.
