Senior Republicans are searching for a third-party candidate to run in
November's general election as part of a final desperate effort to prevent
either Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton becoming president.

Both figures are anathema to a swath of conservative officials who say
Mitt Romney, their 2012 nomination, is at the head of their list.

High-profile Republicans, from former president George W Bush to Paul
Ryan, the party's most senior elected official, are refusing to endorse
their presumptive candidate while Mrs Clinton is assembling a Republicans
for Hillary group as she tries to exploit disarray caused by Mr Trump's
controversial ascent.

Although third party candidates face an uphill struggle, an independent
campaign could attract enough support to prevent Mr Trump or Mrs Clinton
who both attract almost as much hostility as backing from winning the 270
electoral college votes they need to become president.

That would leave the decision in the hands of a Republican-controlled
Congress, an outcome unprecedented in the modern era.

An independent Republican candidate can help prevent the conflation of the
Republican party with Trump and of conservatism with Trumpism, he wrote.
"Such a candidate could also appeal to many independents and some
Democrats. He or she could win.

Mrs Clinton has been quick to spot an opportunity, signalling that she is
prepared to tack to the Right to pick up disaffected Republicans.

Mrs Clinton is also cultivating links with prominent Republican figures
she got to know during her time as American secretary of state in the
Obama administration.

Among them are Mark Salter, a senior adviser to John McCain, the defeated
Republican candidate in the 2008 election, who has already declared his
support for Mrs Clinton.

They also include Robert Gates, a former defence secretary, and General
David Petraeus, a former CIA director and ex-commander of allied coalition
forces in Iraq.

This week her campaign gave a taste of how they will use Mr Trump's
bombastic public statements against him. On Wednesday, the day Mr Trump
ascended to the top of the Republican ticket, the Clinton campaign
released a compilation of her opponents greatest hits.

They included his infamous line that Mexican immigrants were rapists and
drug dealers, his call for foreign Muslims to be banned from entering the
US and his confused assertion that women who have illegal abortions should
be punished.

Most devastating of all, though, was an ad in which Mr Trumps fellow
Republicans did Mrs Clintons bidding for her. It shows Marco Rubio calling
his former rival a phony, and Ted Cruz labelling him utterly amoral.

The most biting critique comes from Mitt Romney: His domestic policies
would lead to recession. His foreign policies would make America and the
world less safe.
