Sometimes there aren't any good choices
Lancaster Eagle Gazette

It was the nursing home in Cleveland
and my mother, age 91 at the end of
the month, had been taken to the
hospital. When the doctor called that
afternoon he ...

<snip>

The hospital dietician was called:
What could they possibly get Mom to
eat? My mother vetoed everything
until I mentioned that we'd been
smuggling candy to her at the nursing
home. Perhaps, she ruled,
marshmallows and a chocolate bar
might be acceptable. We looked at the
dietician. Well, any nourishment
is better than no nourishment, said she,
and so we were welcome to try. A fast
run across the street to procure the
carbohydrates, and then we were back.
My mother suspiciously looked on as
I opened the powdery plastic bag of
Wal-Mart marshmallows but finally
selected one. It was more than
anyone had seen her eat in several days,
and perhaps we'd saved her life.
But by dinner time it was clear that we'd
been sent on a pointless errand --
Vera G Kinsler would eat no more
marshmallows, no more chocolate and
certainly no food from the hospital.
In short, it appeared that she was
planning to starve herself to death,
and from her confused speech we
wondered if she wasn't already well along
in the process. This sort of thing is
not unheard of. Once you've stopped
eating for a while, your hunger stops,
and eventually you deteriorate to
the point where there's no going back.
There are apparently other steps
that can be taken, but it's not clear
if her condition will allow them.

Nurse Fired Over Facebook Comments
About Patient

http://www.businessinsurance.com/
article/20100808/ISSUE0504/308089993

As an example of how healthcare
workers sometimes get in trouble with
social networking, this article
discusses how a nurse's Facebook posts
about a patient led to her termination.
According to the report, the nurse
wrote on Facebook that she had come
face to face with a cop killer and
hoped he rotted in hell. Though she
didn't say his name, the man to whom
she was referring was widely known in
the area because of the extensive
coverage of his crimes and his arrest.
For this reason, the hospital
administrators said the nurse was
guilty of disseminating protected
health information about a patient
in a public forum. The nurse is
appealing her termination.

Healthcare Workers Struggle with
Social Networking and Patient Privacy

Hospital administrators across
the country are struggling to deal with
protecting patient privacy from
employees who use Facebook and other forms
of social networking during work
hours. This article in the LA Times
discusses how many hospitals have
enforced zero-tolerance policies about
social networking, offering numerous
examples of employees being fired for
sharing information about patients
online.
