When the doctor called that afternoon he ... <snip> The hospital dietician was called: What could they possibly get Mom to eat? My mother vetoed everything until I mentioned that we'd been smuggling candy to her at the nursing home. Perhaps, she ruled, marshmallows and a chocolate bar might be acceptable. We looked at the dietician. Well, any nourishment is better than no nourishment, said she, and so we were welcome to try. A fast run across the street to procure the carbohydrates, and then we were back. My mother suspiciously looked on as I opened the powdery plastic bag of Wal-Mart marshmallows but finally selected one. It was more than anyone had seen her eat in several days, and perhaps we'd saved her life. But by dinner time it was clear that we'd been sent on a pointless errand -- Vera G Kinsler would eat no more marshmallows, no more chocolate and certainly no food from the hospital. In short, it appeared that she was planning to starve herself to death, and from her confused speech we wondered if she wasn't already well along in the process. This sort of thing is not unheard of. Once you've stopped eating for a while, your hunger stops, and eventually you deteriorate to the point where there's no going back. There are apparently other steps that can be taken, but it's not clear if her condition will allow them. http://www.lancastereaglegazette.com/ article/20100815/NEWS01/8150317/ Sometimes-there-aren-t-any-good-choices BRIEFCASE Delmarva Daily Times The nursing home provided the meal and the team served the guests, and plan to return. According to the report, the nurse wrote on Facebook that she had come face to face with a cop killer and hoped he rotted in hell. Though she didn't say his name, the man to whom she was referring was widely known in the area because of the extensive coverage of his crimes and his arrest. For this reason, the hospital administrators said the nurse was guilty of disseminating protected health information about a patient in a public forum. The nurse is appealing her termination.
