Web Based Medical and Related Databases to Consider for Research

The post below was sent to a medical discussion group on which a member suggested that I might be able to help with a question about what search tools to use for a medical question of one of the group's members.

The person who suggested I might be able to add to his comments, noted PogoFrog as a search tool that is helpful for websites that are medically oriented and quality sources. I agree with his recommendation and have discussed and used PogoFrog on Net-Gold, but I did not mention it in this post as he already had.

Those on this list may find this response helpful in their own research.

==============================

Thanks for the kind referal. I will mention a few databases that can be considered for this topic that appears rather specific and difficult.

If the libraries in your state provide access to databases as they do in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey and many other states, check with a librarian in your area at a public library to see if Medline is one of the databases provided. There is a good chance, if Medline is provided that this would be the EBSCO version of this database and this is the same content as PubMed that is provided by the United States government and is the comprehensive database of medical journal literature created and maintained by the National Library of Medicine.

PubMed, unfortunately, has just been revised and the search capabilities according to many medical reference librarians who cannot find harsh enough words about these changes that are acceptable in polite professional company have been holding forth on the MedLib-L list over several months on and off on this topic. PubMed can be found here.

[I also had a professor who teaches in a medical field in my office yesterday and he is also very unamused and unhappy with the changes in PubMed. It is important for folks in academic institutions to realize that the Medline database from various commercial vendors has the exact same content with drastically different searching interfaces. At Temple we have Medline access via OVID, EBSCO, FirstSearch and the providers of Web of Science. I never have to stuggle using PubMed and folks with only this access have my sympathy.]

Even though Google search software produces highly inaccurate results, one can never trust it for complete or thorough results, PubMed is completely included in both Google Scholar and Google Government. Google Scholar also includes Science Direct, JSTOR and Muse and much more. Academic libraries pay hugh sums of money for these three databases and the main difference in the academic library versions is the inclusion of full text.

Please also notice in Google Scholar that you can use the drop down menu under the search dialog box to change the search to one of legal research articles and law cases, a feature that is now several months old. As one article I recently quoted said about another new Google development, "another day, another Google app". <g>

I have a substantial body of information about PubMed on Net-Gold and you can use this URL to find this content:

In addition you may want to try SCIRUS, a product of Elsevier, that has scholarly journals as well as web sources in its database.

I created an ongoing active collection of resource posts in my WEBBIB sequence under the series title Meet the Googles that shows searching various Google databases for an ever growing range of topics and the content of which may be located with these links:

Make sure on topics like this you also use Google Books as it is a very important tool.

I have some background information on Net-Gold regarding Katrina that may also be useful to you.
