A New York Long Island woman said she was fired after she donated a kidney to help save the life of her boss.

.

Debbie Stevens, a 47-year-old divorced mother of two, filed a formal complaint with the New York State Human Rights Commission last Friday, claiming her boss used her for her organ then fired her "after the woman got what she wanted." Stevens' boss, 61-year-old Jackie Brucia, is one of the West Islip controllers for Atlantic Automotive Group, a billion-dollar dealership operator. Brucia hired Stevens in January 2009 as an assistant.

.

"She just started treating me horribly, viciously, inhumanly after the surgery," Stevens told ABCNews.com. "It was almost like she hired me just to get my kidney." Although Stevens turned out to be less than a perfect kidney match for Brucia, Stevens donated her organ to an out-of-state stranger so that Brucia could move up on the organ donor list.

.

.

A few months later, Stevens moved back to Long Island and asked Brucia if she had any job openings. Brucia hired her within weeks.

.

Then, in January 2011, Stevens said her boss called her into her office and asked if she was serious about donating her kidney.

.

"I said, 'Yeah, sure. This isn't a joking matter,'" Stevens said. "I did not do it for job security. I didn't do it to get a raise. I did it because it's who I am.

.

"I didn't want her to die," Stevens said.

.

.

Stevens underwent surgery on Aug. 10, 2011. She said doctors hit a nerve in her leg, causing her discomfort and digestive problems.

.

She returned to work four weeks later, and said that's when the problems began.

.

"I don't have words strong enough or large enough to describe her treatment of me," Stevens said. "Screaming at me about things I never did, carrying on to the point where she wouldn't even let me leave my desk. It was constant, constant screaming."

.

Stevens said she was demoted and moved to a car dealership 50 miles from her home. She said the mental stress got even worse, with her supervisor calling her an "actress."

Kidney Transplant Donor Debbie Stevens Reportedly Fired From Job After Donating Kidney To Boss

After giving the gift of life, a New York mom received her worst nightmare in return.

.

To help her boss move up the transplant waiting list, Debbie Stevens, 47, donated her kidney to a man in Missouri, enabling her employer to secure a perfect match from someone in San Francisco, the New York Post reported Monday in an exclusive story.

.

Stevens told the New York Post that her boss, Jackie Brucia, 61, put the pressure on for her to return to work soon after the procedure even though she didnt feel well enough. Once Stevens came back to her job at the Atlantic Automotive Group (AAG) in September, the divorced mother says that she lost her overtime pay and was demoted to a dealership 50 miles from her home.

.

After lawyers wrote a letter to the company, Stevens was allegedly fired.

.

I decided to become a kidney donor to my boss, and she took my heart, Stevens told the news outlet.

.

Though Brucia has ardently supported the National Kidney Registry, Stevens says she hasn't seen any compassion from her boss.

.

Stevens lawyer told the Post that he plans to file a discrimination lawsuit against AAG.

I feel very betrayed. This has been a very hurtful and horrible experience for me. She just took this gift and put it on the ground and kicked it.

.

In papers filed Friday with the state Human Rights commission, Stevens charges that she was clearly set up by Jackie Brucia, 61, her once-ailing boss at the billion-dollar Atlantic Automotive Group, which operates several new-car dealerships.

.

Stevens said she first got to know Brucia, one of the West Islip companys controllers, while toiling as a clerical worker for the firm starting in January 2009.

.

snip

.

Brucia had been apparently grooming her to be her backup plan, according to the papers. But while Stevens was a close health match for Brucia, she wasnt a perfect one. So the doctors agreed to allow Stevens to donate her left kidney to someone else in the transplant group so that Brucia could move up the waiting list and get her organ from someone else.

.

snip

.

Stevens said she did not realize that she was in for serious pain, discomfort in her legs and digestive problems after the surgery on Aug. 10, 2011. She said she felt pressured to return to work Sept. 6, before she was ready even while her boss was still recovering at home. When Stevens went home sick three days after her return, she said, Brucia actually called her from home to berate her.

.

She . . . said, What are you doing? Why arent you at work? I told her I didnt feel good, Stevens told The Post. She said, You cant come and go as you please. People are going to think youre getting special treatment.

.

After Brucia returned to work, shed yell at Stevens in front of co-workers over alleged mistakes, Stevens said.

.

Stevens said that her office and overtime were eventually taken away and that she was demoted to a dealership 50 miles from her home in a high-crime neighborhood that co-workers jokingly called Siberia. Experiencing mental anguish, she consulted a psychiatrist. and her lawyers wrote a letter to the company after which Stevens was quickly fired, the papers state.

.

Brucia did not return phone calls from The Post. She was spotted outside her Babylon home Friday getting into a limo with plastic cups and what appeared to be a bottle of pink champagne.

.

snip

.

AAG also did not return a request for comment.

.

Stevens lawyer, Lenard Leeds, said he plans to file a discrimination lawsuit against AAG, and would likely seek millions of dollars in compensation.

.

Another lawyer for Stevens, Jason Barbara, added, [Brucia] turns on her, and she should have been kissing her feet.

.

Still, Stevens said, I have no regrets [that] I donated a kidney because it saved the life of a man in Missouri.

Mom of 2 Fired After Donating Kidney to Her Boss

The Stir

.

Debbie's lawyers are certain that Jackie set up the entire thing as a scam in order to get her kidney, and never had any intention of keeping Stevens around after the surgery. And if that's truly the case, then needing an organ transplant may not be the worst thing that Brucia has ever had to go through.

Following surgery last August, Stevens returned to work in early September while her boss was still recovering at home.

.

Saying that she felt pressured to go back in before she was ready, Stevens said she did not appreciate the serious pain, discomfort in her legs and digestive problems she would suffer after the procedure.

.

But when she took three days off ill after Brucia had returned, Stevens claims that the beneficiary of her generosity actually called her from home to tell her off.

.

She . . . said, What are you doing? Why arent you at work? I told her I didnt feel good, Stevens told The Post.

.

She said, You cant come and go as you please. People are going to think youre getting special treatment.

.

Stevens also claims that Brucia would bawl at her in front of colleagues over alleged mistakes, following her recovery.

.

Adding that her office and overtime were eventually taken away, Stevens told the newspaper that she was also sidelined to a dealership 50 miles from her home in a high-crime area nicknamed Siberia.

.

Having consulted a psychiatrist after a period of mental anguish, Stevens lawyers wrote to AAG. The papers claim that Stevens was quickly fired.

.

AAG and Brucia did not return requests to the newspaper for comments.

.

But it was noted that Brucia was spotted outside her home on Friday getting into a limo with plastic cups and what appeared to be a bottle of pink champagne.

.

Lucky she has a good kidney to help process the fizz if she fancies a sip...
