WHILE most of the developed world has moved on from the Ebola crisis these
orphans cant. Heartbreaking stories of children left starving, homeless
and forced into the sex trade are emerging from Sierra Leone.

The country is still fighting the deadly disease which first began in May
2014. So far it has affected every district of the country and a national
state of emergency was declared by President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma in July
2014.

Over 12,000 children have now become orphans having lost either one or
both parents to Ebola.
.
In a report by UK charity Street Child they estimate there are thousands
more orphaned children they havent been able to identify.
.
Mariatu, 16, became the head of her household looking after her eight
younger siblings when both of her parents were in quarantine receiving
treatment for Ebola.
.
She resorted to sleeping with a neighbour in exchange for food to feed the
family but as a result she is now pregnant.
.
While her mother survived, her father died from Ebola so Mariatu and her
family work every day in the quarry mining stone to sell and feed
themselves. However they are not always able to make a sale and when
interviewed by Street Child she had not eaten in four days.

The neighbour has disappeared so Mariatu faces raising her child alone and
finding food to feed an extra mouth.

The orphans left behind from the crisis face many challenges and risks
such as a stigma, trauma, poverty, malnutrition, a lack of education,
marginalisation, abuse, teenage pregnancy and sexual exploitation.
