Football League Managers wear 'Badge of Hope'
Once again Football League Managers showed their support for people living
with HIV/AIDS by wearing the HIVsport Football Badge of Hope over the
World AIDS Day period.

show their support for World AIDS Day and in so doing help to reduce the
stigma and discrimination that often

How to avoid getting infected with HIV
Remember you cannot tell just by looking at someone whether they have HIV,
so it is important that you take responsibility for yourself and make sure
you keep yourself safe. Also remember that if you do happen to become
exposed to HIV when you are away, then without taking an HIV test you may
not know about it until many years later. During the time of not knowing
if you are infected, you may pass the virus on to your partner or to other
people you have sex with when you get back to the UK.This is how HIV gets
transmitted and that is something we need to work together to prevent.

What to do if I forget to use a condom?
Get medical help immediately! There is still a chance you can stop HIV
infection taking hold after exposure provided you start a course of
treatment known as PEP (short for Post Exposure Prophylaxis) within 72
HOURS of exposure - in fact, the sooner the better within this window of
opportunity. If you leave it more than 72 hours (thats 3 days) then PEP
stands no chance of working.

The Olympic Games poses opportunities and challenges for Sexual Health in
London and other host cities, not just for the local populations and
visitors but also for the athletes.

In Sydney, authorities initially distributed 70,000 condoms to athletes
but an additional 20,000 were ordered to meet demand. Around 10,000
commercial sex workers were operating at the time of the Games as
Commercial sex work was legalised in 1995. In fact, sex workers were
recruited from abroad to meet the expected surge. Importantly, the
Australian government contributed public money to fund sex education to
sex workers.
300,000 condoms were distributed in 90,000 rooms in 424 hotels (3 stars or
more) for the Beijing Olympic Games and other key work included a
collaboration between Olympic organisers, UNAIDS and the International
Olympic Committee (IOC) to promote an HIV/AIDS Awareness Toolkit which
provided material on HIV/AIDS education to members of the Olympic Movement
and to the wider sporting community.

Swimming is good for you, as is moderate exercise of any kind, as it
conditions and enhances the immune system. People living with HIV don't
need to take any additional precautions in swimming pools, hot tubs or
saltwater. The chemicals used in swimming pools and hot tubs would
instantly kill any HIV and if the public health authorities feel it's safe
for the general public to swim in the water, then it's also safe for
people living with HIV.
At the Gay Games IV in New York City in 1994, of the 11,000 participating
athletes, 1,200 were swimmers many of them HIV positive.
If you are HIV positive, exercise helps increase muscle mass and
counteracts what can be devastating effects of wasting (people with HIV
tend to lose lean body mass rather than fat). However, its probably best
to begin exercising while you are without symptoms and healthy as
symptomatic individuals should probably avoid overtraining and exhaustive
exercise. However, with advances in HIV treatment and care, there is
opportunity to begin treatment earlier and not become symptomatic in the
first place. Be mindful that HIV medications can have side effects such as
fatigue, headaches, and numbness in the hands and feet, so remember to
talk to your doctor for further support with treatment side effects
whether or not they prevent you from exercising and before beginning any
new type of exercise programme.
