The Roles of Information Literacy and Friends in the Academic Library

.

.

Information literacy is not just an academic concept, it is a way of life and a life skill that needs to be taught and incorporated into ones work, learning methods and lifestyle. Academic libraries as major sources of knowledge and information sources and the tools to use them are critical places for teaching information literacy. It should be a major program in the academic library and the library should have the facilities for this instruction including an adequate number of classrooms and lecture halls, a large number of computers for user use and special break out rooms for specialized activities.

The teaching programs related to information literacy need to reflect and provide coverage of not only information literacy, but also its "friends" as I refer to them in the Information Literacy and Friends Research Guide.

http://guides.temple.edu/infolit

In this guide I cover these literacies and related skills that in my view are a major part of the core curriculum of the academic library:

Media Literacy and News Literacy

Health Information Literacy

Science Literacy and Scientific Literacy

Mathematics Literacy

Digital Literacy

Computer Literacy

Technology Literacy

Financial and Consumer Literacy

Law Information Literacy, Legal Information Literacy

Music Literacy

Visual Literacy

Cultural Literacy

Quantitative Research

Qualitative Research

Evidence Based Research

There may be other literacies out there, but this is a solid core group to surround and add to the skill based curriculum of information literacy. In basic English writing courses, the library instruction segment often includes instruction about scholarly versus trade press versus popular sources. This is a very important part of this instruction and an aspect that needs to be a focus of instruction in the disciplines ongoing at both undergraduate and graduate levels. It is not enough to just teach how to distinguish the different levels of publication, however. It is also important to provide instruction regarding what databases and internet based academic search engines are to be used to find scholarly and peer reviewed publications that are required for the research work of college courses in the subject fields students are undertaking.

Indeed it is critical to not only make students aware of the core databases in their subject fields, but also to teach them for various kinds of topics and research, how to effectively search these databases.

To be able to distinguish between scholarly and popular sources on a specific topic, a student must first be able to find actual sources or publications on the selected topic. Lack of basic searching skills lowers grades received on many research assignments for a substantial number of students. How are students going to learn about media literacy, health literacy, or any other literacy or for that matter any research topic if they have less than primitive searching skills to find publications about these topics? Hence an academic library of the future must incorporate work with both faculty and students as extensively as possible to inculcate quality searching skills for a variety of database programs such as Google search tools, Summon, EBSCOHost, ProQuest, Ovid and so forth. Faculty should be provided with seminars or courses that teach database searching skills as it is likely that the faculty they encountered up to the dissertation level did little teaching in this area. Having as a store front the Writing Center of a university and the Teaching and Learning Center for faculty as part of the library can assist such teaching programs. When these library inclusions provide teaching and learning skills to mesh with content provided by the library to faculty and students in research and database searching skills, a more comprehensive training environment is provided. Just as the faculty may have a teaching and learning center, the library must become the active and program oriented teaching and learning center for students who will be provided, as needed, with instruction and learning tools to fill the gaps in their research skills. Having the university press as a part of the library will facilitate counseling and instruction from these publishing professionals regarding how to get faculty research publishable and published to add to what they learn from the library regarding the research process.

Faculty Credentialing

To create an information literacy resource center, the advanced academic library must engage in some new initiatives.

Marketing of the information programs needs to be accomplished through the college news sources, the college radio station, and direct marketing at events to both faculty and students. Sports events could have information literacy half times with different focuses and topics covered at different games. The primary mission of a college is education. Would it not be novel for colleges to include education in sports events?

A museum should be created in the library that tells the story and history of each of the information literacies with viewers that show educational programs on demand that are lively and informative and well as didactic. Exhibits can also include artifacts from all eras, for each literacy, that demonstrate the methods of creating information literacy and its friends in different time periods. For example, a basic printing press could be one exhibit. Another could be a working microfilm Magazine Index or Newspaper Index from IAC if one could be found. Videos that discuss various sources of differing quality and accuracy that were published in the media about a specific controversial issue could illustrate and teach media literacy principles.

With substantial thought and creativity, the academic library can add to its roles as store house of information and the source of tools to find that information. Providing a teaching center for the skills to do research and learn from its resources for both the university community and very importantly for the people who live in the community surrounding the university as well needs to be a vital role of the university library. A well done information literacy museum alone should attract extensive national and perhaps international interest and visitation.

To assist with research on these various literacies and how they can be taught and exposed in a library information literacy program, there are extensive link collections and bibliographies on these various literacies in my Information Literacy and Friends research guide.

This is one kind of resource that will greatly assist faculty and students to do better research and it is a database available to libraries.

An active and successful library based information literacy instruction program will improve student grades, retention, outcomes and graduation rates, all vital issues to a college or university.
