In a blog posted on April Fool's Day, Google announced a new feature to its Scholar service. This was no prank. It was the genuine debut of a new tool called Google Scholar Metrics. The service follows the same principle that has made Google's web search engine so successful - when you are unsure what a user is looking for, give them a list of options ranked by a metric of popularity. In this instance, the users are academics ready to submit their next breakthrough but are uncertain which journal to choose. The solution Scholar Metrics offers is a database summarizing the sway of the distributors of scholarship "to help authors as they consider where to publish their new research".

.

.

Scholar Metrics isn't the first tool for evaluating the influence of scholarly publications. In January 2009 Thomas Reuters introduced the impact factor. It is calculated by taking the total number of citations a journal has received in the past year and dividing by the total number of articles it has published in the previous two years. Impact factors are released as part of the annual Journal Citation Reports (JCR). Unlike Scholar Metrics, the JCR is a proprietary service.

.

.

Another advantage of Scholar Metrics is its inclusion of web repositories like the Social Science Research Network and arXiv, where authors can make manuscripts or published articles available to the web community at no cost to themselves or their readers. By making it into the top 10 of the h-index ranking, these repositories demonstrate the importance of open access and early views in strengthening a publication's sway.

.

But who needs to continue to list Scholar Metrics' virtues? It's free and it's Google's. Bottom line.

.

To get started with the service, visit the Google Scholar page. Below the search box of the main page is a link to the metrics service, which in the company's characteristically low-key fashion is labelled simply "New!". All of the current measures are based on a five-year window beginning on April 1st 2007 and the database includes publications in ten languages. Users can browse or search for terms within publication titles, and clicking on the h-index for any specific publication opens up a page with details on the articles and citations statistics constituting its h-core. Curious to know what statistical journal is most influencing its field? The answer is just a click away.

Google Scholar Metrics for Publications

Most researchers are familiar with well-established journals and conferences in their field. They are often less familiar with newer publications or publications in related fields - there're simply too many! Today, were introducing Google Scholar Metrics: an easy way for authors to quickly gauge the visibility and influence of recent articles in scholarly publications.

Coverage of Publications

.

Scholar Metrics currently cover articles published between 2007 and 2011, both inclusive. The metrics are based on citations from all articles that were indexed in Google Scholar as of April 1st, 2012. This also includes citations from articles that are not themselves covered by Scholar Metrics.

.

Since Google Scholar indexes articles from a large number of websites, we cannot always tell where (or if!) a particular article has been published. To avoid misidentification of publications, we have included only the following items:

journal articles from websites that follow our inclusion guidelines;

.

conference articles and preprints from a small number of manually identified sources.

.

Furthermore, we have specifically excluded the following items:
 court opinions, patents, books, and dissertations;

.

publications with fewer than 100 articles published between 2007 and 2011;

.

publications that received no citations to articles published between 2007 and 2011.

.

On balance, Scholar Metrics cover a substantial fraction of scholarly articles published in the last five years. However, they don't currently cover a large number of articles from smaller journals.

.

Most of the articles covered by Scholar Metrics are from journals. A significant fraction also comes from conferences, pre-prints, and technical reports.
