The issue of having a Facebook page or some other social networking website for the medieval history academic discussion group is currently being held on the private and not archived discussion group. I shared these thoughts with this group that may be of interest to other academic groups that have or want discussion groups and/or social networking sites online. There have been a number of people on MEDIEV-L who posted one line that said basically "No way Facebook, I will not be involved." and other comments that Facebook breeds inactive groups where no real activity takes place.

One very important thing to consider about Facebook is that there are currently major privacy concerns about Facebook:

Please also notice the slope of the graph on the last link.

In addition, not unlike the main list for this group, there is as far as I know, no outside indexing by search engines such as Google for content on Facebook so that again the valuable information shared by the members of this group cannot be revisited by members who do not archive the groups content themselves in their own email or by the outside world seeking to learn about medieval history.

There has been quite a stir lately about the decision by Ning to charge for using the Ning site and one reaction has been to share alternatives, lists are springing up on the internet of such sources and this is a link to one such list that could be instructive regarding options for an additional social networking site for this medieval history discussion group.

I do suggest that finding a site where medieval scholarship can be found by those searching internet search engines would be an admirable goal for this group as much wonderful content shared on this list is simply not available to the rest of the world and this is a field in which there are complaints that the outside world fails to understand the values and importance of medieval history. Hiding the content of this list does not serve to change this picture. Consider what I have put out about medival history sources, and I only had one medieval history course. This list also includes my other history links.
