In order to make subjects easier to find, they are rotated. Subjectheadings are often constructed of specific parts that are placed in acertain order. The topic, or first part, can be followed by one or moresubdivisions. However, since not everyone knows this order, the headingsare entered in the index several times, with the subdivisions in rotatedorder."

CIRRIE uses a controlled vocabulary for its subject searches: if yoursearch terms are not in the CIRRIE Thesaurus, you will not get any results

(The first example will return no results as polio is not an approvedsubject heading. Additionally, some terms may have different meanings:medicine refers to the practice and not medication)

It is also possible to search the Thesaurus. A phrase can be searched inthe term only or in both the term and scope note. You may also limitresults to authorized terms only

Only enter one subject heading per search box: if you would like to searchfor multiple subjects, select "Add another term" and an additional searchfield will appear

It may also be useful to consult the CIRRIE Rotated Thesaurus. It groupsterms alphabetically by their key term, so that Transportation, Airtransportation, Public transportation, Rail transportation andTransportation accessibility which ordinarily would be listed under fourpages alphabetically are listed sequentially under Transportation
