Eben E. Rexford
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eben_E._Rexford

.

.

Portrait of Eben Eugene Rexford from J. H. HallEben Eugene Rexford (16 July 1848 - 18 October 1916) was an American writer and poet, and author of lyrics to popular and gospel songs.

.

Born in Johnsburg, New York, he moved with his family to Ellington, Wisconsin in 1855. His first poems were published in the New York Ledger when Rexford was 14. Among the many songs he wrote, Rexford is best remembered for the lyrics to Silver Threads Among the Gold which were set to music by Hart Pease Danks. This song was one of the first items to be recorded mechanically. Another poem which has had continuing popularity is The Ride of Paul Venarez, which is considered to be a cowboy poem, even though the author was from Wisconsin. It has been turned into a song, Billy Venero, and has a colorful history.[1]

.

Rexford was a prolific writer. Most of his books were about gardening. In addition, he wrote many poems and stories. He worked with the Ladies' Home Journal for 14 years. After leaving that magazine, he wrote for American Homes and Gardens, House and Gardens, and American Home Monthly.[2] His articles also appeared frequently in Lippincot's and Outing. Rexford's fiction was published stories by Beadle and Adams and other periodical publishers. He was a member of the Chicago Press Club and the Authors Club of Boston.[3] For more than 20 years he served as organist at the Congregational Church of Shiocton, WI. Following many years as Town Clerk at Bovina, he died in Green Bay and was buried at Bovina Cemetery.

.

Eben E. Rexford received an honorary doctorate from his alma mater, Lawrence University ,[4] in 1908, and he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.

Like many of the dime novelists, he began to write when very young, and at fifteen published his first poem, "To My Wife" (!) in the New York Weekly, and at seventeen had had several poems accepted and paid for by Frank Leslie. He taught school in 1865 and 1866, then entered Lawrence College at Appleton, Wisconsin, and remained there for three years. It was during his student days that he wrote his famous song "Silver Threads among the Gold." After leaving college, he went to Shiocton and began to make literature his profession, although for a time he also presided over a rural post office which paid him something less than one hundred dollars a year.

.

He was married December 9, 1890,(2) to Mrs. Harriet Bauman Harsh, at Shiocton.

.

Rexford wrote many short sketches and over a thousand poems for the Saturday Journal and the Banner Weekly. He also wrote poems, sketches, and short stories for the Ladies' Home Journal, Youth's Companion, Harpers Young People, Chicago Ledger, Lippincott's Magazine, Outlook, Independent, Congregationalist, Frank Leslie''s Popular Monthly, Golden Days, and many other periodicals, and nickel novels for the Nickel Library and other publications. He published a book of poems, "Brother and Lover," in 1886 and a novel, "John Fielding and his Enemy," in 1888. In 1885 he became interested in horticulture and conducted that department in Home and Flowers, and from 1890 to 1900 a similar department in the Ladies' Home Journal. He also wrote a number of horticultural books: "Grandmother's Garden" (1887), "Home Floriculture" (1888), and "The Swamp Secret" (1897).

.
