This winter has been mild and we have been able to spend more time in the garden and on the lawn than we normally do at this time of year.

.

Some of us may have forgotten that we usually do much of our indoor gardening in January and February. In a normal year it is too cold and/or wet and otherwise uncomfortable to spend most of the day outdoors.

.

Take some time to look over each indoor plant. Since the plants are indoors, this can be done anytime of the day or night, regardless of the weather. That is one of the better attributes of indoor gardening.

.

Start with the foliage. Does it look as it should? Are there little white spots on the leaves or stems? Do these little white spots move or fly away when disturbed? What about the color of the leaves? Are they a lighter than usual shade of green? Are they brown around the edges or do they have brown spots? Do all the leaves seem to be trying to grow in one direction?

.

Plant foliage can tell us a lot about what is happening with indoor plants. If the color just does not look quite right there is usually a problem getting started that can seriously damage the plant. Most often the problem is in the roots or in the soil around the roots and the plant is trying to send a signal that it might need some attention.

.

White spots can be a nutrient deficiency, disease or insects. Closer examination will be needed to determine which it is. A magnifying glass will help. Scale insects and aphids and be treated with horticultural oil or insecticidal soap. Whiteflies are more difficult to control and may require the use of an insecticide. If an insecticide is needed wait until the temperature outdoors will be above 50 degrees for several hours. Take the plant outside when the day warms up, spray it well, leave it out for several hours, then bring it back in before the temperature drops below 50 degrees. Do not leave the plant outside over night.
