The Master Gardener Handbook lists the following as the chief environmental factors affecting plant growth: light, water, temperature, humidity, ventilation, fertilization and soil.

.

* Light - All plants need light for photosynthesis to produce carbohydrates (sugar) or food for the plant to grow. This is the most essential factor for indoor plant growth. There are three aspects of light: intensity, duration and quality.

.

Intensity influences the manufacture of plant food, stem length, leaf color and flowering. The intensity of the natural light in the home depends on nearness to a window. Windows with a southern exposure have the most light intensity and the area is warmer. Windows on the east or west of the home have about 60 percent of light intensity as the south and are less warm. The northern exposure receives about 20 percent as the south and is the coolest.

.

The duration of natural light depends on the length of daylight. Some plants need shorter days to set flowers. Poinsettia and Christmas cactus are two of these plants.

.

The quality of natural light depends on the type of glass in the windows, whether or not the glass is dirty, if there are buildings or shrubs outside, the weather, the season, or curtains on the windows. The quality of artificial light refers to the wavelength. From the Master Gardener Handbook: "For photosynthesis, plants require mostly blue and red light. Incandescent lights produce mostly red and far-red light, but are very low in blue. Fluorescent lights vary according to the phosphors used by the manufacturer. Cool-white lights produce mostly blue light, and are low in red light; however, they have the advantage of being cool enough to position quite close to plants. Therefore, either a combination of warm-white and cool-white fluorescent tubes or incandescent lights with cool-white fluorescent tubes should be used."
