. INDOOR GARDENING: Go Bananas for an Indoor Gardening Challenge Go Bananas for an Indoor Gardening Challenge Posted By CAROL DUFTON, Stratford Master Gardener The Beacon Herald <http://www.stratfordbeaconherald.com/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2285508>Three years ago, I discovered packages of seeds for muse ensete or "false banana" in a local hardware store. This particular variety is grown mainly as a root crop in Ethiopia though it may eventually flower and produce non-edible fruit.
Bananas were originally wild and native to Southeast Asia. Not really a tree, but a giant, clumping tropical herb, these majestic exotic plants can grow as tall as 12 metres.
I started my project with much skepticism, soaking the seeds for 24 hours as directed, then placing them in resealable plastic bags with a moist growing medium on top of the fridge where it was consistently warm.
The instructions said germination was slow and erratic, taking from one to six months. I checked the bags daily, making sure the soil was moist, and after a few weeks, I became discouraged but didn't throw them out.
Eventually I forgot about them until one day, months later, while cleaning off the top of the fridge, I came across the bags. One seed had actually germinated sending out a long white, hairy root!
Excited, I transferred the seed to a small pot and in a few weeks, a small leaf emerged. With frequent watering, the little plant soon outgrew the pot and I transplanted it again.
