Prescribe Yourself a Houseplant:
Infographic Reveals Which Shrubs Reduce Levels of Pollutants
Found in Homes, Offices and Near Roads
Energy efficient buildings make toxins build up inside homes and
offices
These include benzene, ammonia and formaldehyde which can have a
detrimental effect on people's health, causing headaches and coughing
Infographic shows particular pot plants that can neutralise
pollutants, for example, spider plants remove xylene, found in printing,
from the air
Chart is based on a Nasa study looking at 'sick building syndrome'

Energy efficient buildings may be good for keeping heating costs down, but
they can make us sick.
.
Printers in the office and cleaning products at home give off potentially
harmful pollutants that can cause dizziness, confusion and even sore
throats.
.
But the good news is that symptoms can be alleviated with the careful
choice of a houseplant, with peace lily and florist's chrysanthemum being
the most effective at neutralising toxins.
.
An infographic produced by gardening advice site, LoveTheGarden.com shows
the best plants for tackling toxins.
.
The informative graphic is based on Nasas 1989 Clean Air Study, in which
scientists set out to find the most effective indoor plants for sucking
pollutants from the air.
.
Despite being 25 years old, it remains the most comprehensive research on
the subject.
.
At the time, a World Health Organisation report found that 30 per cent of
new and retrofitted buildings encouraged sick building syndrome in which
people show symptoms from airborne pollutants inside buildings.
.
Since then, the problem may have got worse as our homes and offices become
more tightly sealed and energy efficient.
