Treat these plants poorly, however, and they will wither and die as surely as any florist's bouquet. Two years ago Paul Hyland, who spent 20 years growing roses for the cut-flower industry, set up an indoor-plant offshoot of his Glasshaus nursery in Richmond. On a street with a pointedly urban-industrial aesthetic he leased a warehouse and grew a jungle inside it. Plants grow up the walls and cascade from the ceiling. Figs, palms and strelitzia are stretching for the roof while peperomias creep over the floor.

.

Devil's ivy (Epipremnum aureum) is flashing gold, Grape ivy (Cissus rhombifolia) lends a verdant gloss and begonias are all technicolour variegation. There are carnivorous plants, foolproof aspidistra and such darlings of the 1960s and '70s as Schefflera and Spathiphyllum. Monstera deliciosa is growing rampant and Ficus alii is all loose and casual. One wall is taken out by weeping trails of Rhipsalis.

.

While they have all adapted to a life indoors it is never as simple as taking a plant even a tiny shade-loving species that hails from the understory of deep forests and placing it where ever suits your dor.

.

"Putting a plant inside without the right conditions is the same scenario as buying a dog breed for indoor conditions and placing it outdoors without a kennel," Hyland says. They still require the sort of light, air movement, temperature, nutrients and moisture levels they would have received in their natural habitat.

.

Sometimes that can be achieved as simply as putting a plant near a window or well away from a heating duct (they are too drying). Other times more intervention is required. Hyland cut skylights into his Cremorne warehouse roof. He also installed LED "grow lights" which, unlike regular indoor lighting, provide a light spectrum similar to that of the sun. In dim spaces grow lights are the only way plants get the right light spectrum for photosynthesis.
