I'm referring to plants that once sat on kitchen counters, sprawled across desks in office cubicles and added color to front porches. Yes, we're talking about houseplants that outgrew their indoor status and were banished, often with little thought, to the backyard.
.In many cases, the exiles everything from Christmas cactus to gloxinia die quickly, unable to withstand the rigors of our climate. But in some instances, former houseplants thrive outdoors and, depending on where they're installed, can turn out to be assets or problems.
.Among common interior plants that prosper in the garden are two vines that grow in tens of thousands of yards across Central and Southern Florida. One of these is pothos (Epipremnum aureum), also called hunter's robe. When it's young and cute, this native of the Solomon Islands features small, heart-shaped, gold-splashed leaves. But its true potential is revealed only when it finds a tree to climb. As a pothos plant gains altitude, its leaves still retaining their variegation become ever larger, eventually growing 18 inches across and 30 inches long.
.The other vine that's often pitched out of homes and into gardens is Syngonium podophyllum, a Tropical American plant known as arrowhead vine. It behaves much the same way as pothos.
