House plants are the ultimate functional indoor dor. Well-placed greenery
doesn't just brighten a space; it also purifies the air while creating a
more relaxing, restful ambience. Scientists have even found a link between
the presence of plants and reduced levels of stress and tension. In a 2008
study, Dutch researchers found that hospital patients with indoor plants
in their rooms reported lower anxiety levels than patients without them.
And if you look around town, you'll notice indoor plants sprucing up
hospitals, banks, automobile showrooms, and other offices.

With the weather getting harsh, nature lovers in Muscat are heading to
nurseries to select beautiful plants for their homes. There are a few
well-stocked vendors in Muscat who provide not only plants, but also soil,
manure, pots, and garden accessories. The nurseries located in Al Seeb and
Al Ghubra are bustling with activity as customers, propelled by the
summers heat, come swarming in search of the finest saplings.

"Plants provide much relief in the scorching summers and also beautify the
premises. As the season peaks, people are asking for fancy plants,
especially for indoors. Growing plants is one major pastime of people in
Muscat in the summer season," says Prakash, a supervisor at the Al Rawabi
Nursery in Seeb.

Keeping your lovely plants alive, however, could be an uphill battle here.
"Oman falls in the arid climate zone that has slow soil formation, low
organic content, and high soil alkaline along with high salinity in some
areas conditions which inhibit plant growth.

Even the most easily grown plants might find it difficult to survive, so
it is important to know which plant varieties are viable, and the
precautions one needs to observe for successful gardening," says Zulfikar
Ali, an expert botanist and Dean of the Indira Gandhi National Open
University (IGNOU) centre in Oman. Gardening in Muscat requires some care
and attention to detailmowing, pruning, cutting, and wateringbut first and
foremost, it requires picking the right plant.
