Culpeper County public school officials have decided to stop assigning a version of Anne Frank's diary, one of the most enduring symbols of the atrocities of the Nazi regime, after a parent complained that the book includes sexually explicit material and homosexual themes.

"The Diary of a Young Girl: the Definitive Edition," which was published on the 50th anniversary of Frank's death in a concentration camp, will not be used in the future, said James Allen, director of instruction for the 7,600-student system. The school system did not follow its own policy for handling complaints about instructional materials, Allen said.

<snip>

Allen said that the more recent version will remain in the school library and that the earlier version will be used in classes. The 1955 play based on Frank's experiences also has been a part of the eighth-grade curriculum for many years. The diary's "universal theme, that there is good in everyone, resonates with these kids," Allen said.

The decision was made in November and published in the Culpeper Star Exponent on Thursday.

Culpeper's policy on "public complaints about learning resources" calls for complaints to be submitted in writing and for a review committee to research the materials and deliberate, Allen said. In this case, the policy was not followed. Allen said the parent registered the complaint orally, no review committee was created and a decision was made quickly by at least one school administrator. He said he is uncertain about the details because he was out of town.

Taking Anne Frank off shelves: Indefensible

This isn't the first time that a classic book has been pulled off a library shelf because a parent didn't want their darling child to read it, but it is equally obscene every time it happens.

In Culpeper County Public Schools, a version of the Diary of A Young Girl, by Anne Frank, was just removed from schools because a parent complained about graphic sexual language, according to the Star Exponent.

Anne Frank wrote her memoir of her life from June 12, 1942 until Aug. 1, 1944, while her family was in hiding from the Nazis during the German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II. She was caught by the Nazis and thrown into concentration camps, where she died of typhus shortly before the camp she was in was liberated by British troops in 1945.

The book was originally published in 1947 by her father, who retrieved the diary after the war. Later more of her entries from the period were found and authenticated and a fuller version was later published.

That is the one that was challenged in Culpeper, according to the Star Exponent, which quoted Jim Allen, director of instruction for the school system, saying, What we have asked is that this particular edition will not be taught. I dont want to make a big deal out of this. So we listened to the parent and we pulled it.

The problem for Allen is that it IS a big deal when books are pulled off shelves because a parent doesnt want their student to read about female genitals in the context of this Holocaust memoir, which is the passage in contention here.

<snip>

Getting involved is one thing; insisting that everyone adhere to a single persons sensibilities is quite another. Ive never heard of a school insisting that a child read a book that a parent does not want that child to read; if parents feel the need to protect their childs innocence, fine, but dont make that decision for everybody else.

Removing the most widely read Holocaust memoir in the world from a school library because one parent was upset is indefensible.

The Diary of a Young Girl: The Definitive Edition, a vivid memoir of Anne Franks private thoughts during the German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II, will no longer be assigned to CCPS students, according to Jim Allen, director of instruction for the school system.

This book is usually given to eighth-grade middle school English students to read.

Citing a parents concern over the sexual nature of the vagina passage in the definitive edition, Allen said school officials immediately chose to pull this version and use an alternative copy.

What we have asked is that this particular edition will not be taught, Allen said from his office Wednesday morning. I dont want to make a big deal out of this. So we listened to the parent and we pulled it.

Apparently, Annes father, Otto Frank, the sole survivor of the Secret Annex, felt the need to censor his daughters most intimate thoughts as well, eliminating about 30 percent of the original diary published in 1947.

He omitted parts where Anne criticized her mother and other Jews living in the confined quarters as well as some sexually suggestive references.

However, during the 50th anniversary of her death in a concentration camp, the Anne Frank Foundation published the unedited definitive version in 1995.

Sometimes dubbed controversial, this book has been translated into more than 50 languages an English version in 1952, and transformed into a play and several movie versions.

On Thursday, I was sitting in my sociology class when my teacher showed us the front page of the Star-Exponent. He read a snippet of the article concerning the Diary of Anne Frank; immediately the classroom was filled with gasps of exasperation. My entire class, made up of high school juniors and seniors, was furious myself especially.

The decision to remove all copies of the definitive edition of The Diary of a Young Girl is cowardly and shirks all responsibility for the education of the students to whom the administration is responsible. On that note, I see no legitimate reason to remove the book from the curriculum.

When I was in eighth grade at Floyd T. Binns Middle School, I read the book. I suppose we read the vulgar passage, but what I remember is the intensity of the literature. I remember the horror that the class experienced together as we read about the concentration camps and the struggle of this young woman and her family. As a class, we were so upset with the bigger picture that no one gave a second thought to the passages that seem so controversial now.

Wow, so Anne Frank was a girl?

That ha[s] to be one of the STUPIDEST things Ive heard in a long time. Quite frankly (no pun intended), that passage is about as sexual as a gynecological exam. Even if there was a legitimate objection to that one passage, the loss of what the rest of the diary teaches is immeasurable.

This was the reaction from one friend of mine, in regards to the Virginia School District that removed the current version of The Diary of Anne Frank, from their shelves. According to an article in The Raw Story, one parent thats right, one parent complained about a passage in the book, where Anne, essentially discovers her vagina.

Another response was as follows.

Imagine being so terrified of anatomy that the mere description of a vagina sends you into shrieking, mouth-foaming outrage.

Myself, Im finding it much harder to put my feelings on this matter into words, other than to say that this is just one more example of why Im terrified at the thought of teaching High School, in this most puritanical and backwards of nations. Its not the kids that scare me. Its the parents, and the spineless, pencil pushing administrators.

School board unaware?

Before the story broke Wednesday, Culpeper County School Board Chairman George Dasher said he was unaware of the decision to pull the book. On Thursday, school board member Bob Beard also said he found out about it by reading the Star-Exponent.

According to the school divisions public complaints about learning resources policy, censorship decisions do not have to be approved by the school board. The CCPS policy states that a review committee consisting of the schools principal, librarian, teacher, complainant, parent and/or student must gather to discuss the matter.

The committees responsibility is to read, view or listen to the material in question, read several reviews, check standard selection aids, talk with knowledgeable people about the challenged material, make and file a recommendation with the principal and superintendent and notify the complainant of the recommendation.

I was aware that there was concern a couple of months ago, Johnson said. A parent concern brought to light an instructional concern that parents had not been notified that the class was using the definitive version of the book beforehand. The decision was made to, in the future, use the edited version or play for middle school students. The decision was not made to cease using The Diary of Anne Frank for instruction.

Reaction

Since learning about the recent decision, outspoken readers have posted their opinions mainly against the recent ruling online.
