Those abandoned buildings that have been thrust into the world's spotlight through photo galleries by the likes of Time and Slate are real and a major part of Detroit's landscape today.

But a few months ago, we came across a different kind of photo from Detroit (above), one that showed the city as a bustling metropolis full of people and booming businesses -- in 1917.

People seemed to love it just as much as they loved those Detroit "ruin porn" photos.

We loved it too, and decided to put together a series of photos showing Detroit at its finest, letting the world see the city that was once labeled "world class," and might be again.

Places and people gone before you got here are compelling in photos. More than paintings, photos wake the dead. Anybody in a pool hall in 1909 is either aged beyond his youth's reckoning or no longer with us.

Shorpy (link from Anthony Hecht) concentrates on the first half of the 20th century through gorgeous high-rez images.

"The Art of the American Snapshot, 1888-1978" is not online. It features the collection of Seattle's Robert E. Jackson, on view last year at the National Gallery. (Story here.)

Its not exactly news that the Internet boasts thousands of photo-sharing sites and photo blogs, ranging from the massively popular flickr.com (basically YouTube for photos) to such lesser-known blog sites as Daily Dose of Imagery (wvs.topleftpixel.com), www.slower.net and www.chromasia.com. But whereas these sites offer a vast array of contemporary photography both artful and mundane, www.shorpy.com offers something entirely different an everymans view of American history. Specializing in historical photos, recent postings include images of a rat catcher (New York City, 1920s), an 11-year-old boy who works in a bakery (Oklahoma, 1917) and a similarly young coal miner (West Virginia, 1908). If you keep in mind that this is a blog meaning organizational coherence is the exception and random finds are the rule then you should have a good time searching.
