Family of Dead Drum Major Calls for FAMU Marching 100 to be Disbanded By Fran Jeffries The Atlanta Journal-Constitution http://www.ajc.com/news/dekalb/family-of-dead-drum-1430909.html . .The family of the drum major from DeKalb County who died after a hazing incident at Florida A & M University is calling for the famed Marching 100 to be disbanded.
."FAMU cannot go on with business as usual. They need to clean house," said Pam Champion, the mother of Robert Champion Jr., who allegedly was beaten to death aboard a chartered bus during a band trip to Orlando last November. On Tuesday, 13 people were charged in the death of the 26-year-old drum major. Eleven were charged with felony hazing; two others face misdemeanor counts.
.The family said they have not yet been told the names of the students charged in the beating death of their son.
.As of Thursday, seven of the 11 people charged with felony hazing in Champion's death had turned themselves in to authorities in various jurisdictions throughout Florida, according to a Florida Department of Law Enforcement spokeswoman. Four of them are still at large. Two are in Georgia and another is in Delaware.
.The school needs to take steps to ensure the safety of students in the band. The band must not be allowed to march again until that happens, Pam and Robert Champion Sr., said at a press conference Thursday afternoon in Atlanta. They claim FAMU has made no major changes in its marching band program since their son was killed. "As far as we know, the hazing could be continuing," Pam Champion said.
.The family's attorney, Christopher Chestnut, also alleged a cover up by FAMU, saying that band alumni had coached students involved in the incident on what to say to investigators.
