COMMENTARY | Michael Rudi, 17-year-old high school student and an asthmatic, very nearly died because the school nurse refused to let him use his inhaler because his mother didn't sign a form.

.

Instead, WKMG reports, Rudi says, "like something out of a horror film," she watched him until he started to lose consciousness. And then she locked the door.

.

His mother found him there, against a wall, unable to breathe, the nurse looking at him, when she got to the school. According to the report, Deltona High School and Verona County officials stand by the nurse's decision.

.

Dr. Raoul Wolf, professor and chief of the section of pediatric allergy, asthma and immunology at the University of Chicago, is an expert in this field and also my father.

.

"You have a trained person who knew what she was supposed to do but didn't do it because a piece of paper wasn't signed," he said. "It's a real problem."

.

What could have happened? According to Wolf, "Though he didn't die, (Rudi) could have suffered serious brain damage from not having enough oxygen. He could have had a stroke. He could have been left dependent on a ventilator or in a comatose state for the rest of his life."

.

snip

.

Says Wolf: "We've had school nurses think the way to treat asthma is to give them cold water to drink," which, he explained, can worsen symptoms as cold can trigger asthma.

.

In the Florida case, the situation was left to the nurse, and the nurse's solution was to lock the door. She did not call 911. She left this child to whatever might come of the asthma episode.

Even though the nurse refused to step over the schools policy and give Rudi his inhaler, she could have called 911. But she didnt, and now Rudis mother wants to press charges for child endangerment.

.

I mean its common sense if I saw an animal on the street in distress I would probably stop to help, why wouldnt she help a child, Sue Rudi told Local 6 reporter Shaun Chaiyabhat. How dare you deny my son something that we all take for granted, breath. Why didnt someone call 911?

School Nurse Refuses To Give Inhaler To Student Having Asthma Attack

Michael said his inhaler was confiscated on Friday after the school dean found it in his locker. Even though it was still in its original packaging with his name on it and directions for its use, it was taken away because his mother had not signed the proper form for him to have it.

.

In order for students to carry their prescribed drugs with them in school, parents must sign a medical release form each year. The school had no such form for Michael to have his inhaler at school. Michaels mother says that even so, her son has been at the school for years and they have a record of her sons asthma.

.

But regardless of the signed paperwork, she is horrified that her son could have died over a technicality. Michael echoed the same sentiments especially regarding the school nurse he says locked the door as soon as he felt like he was going to pass out.

.

Its like something out of a horror film. The person just sits there and watches you die, said Michael Rudi. She sat there, looked at me and she did nothing.

.

But the Volusia County School officials are standing by the unnamed nurses decision to keep Michael from using his inhaler during his asthma attack, citing the medical release form they had no record of. However, they are looking into why 911 was never called which is district policy when a student cannot breathe.

These Are The Morons In Charge Of Teaching Kids.

Take the case Deltona High School senior Michael Rudi. Michael, who is 17, suffers from asthma. Throughout his school career, his parents have notified the Volusia County School District of Michaels need for the use of physician prescribed inhaler. This year, for whatever reason, that notification slipped through the cracks. The school district never received the notification from Michaels parents.

.

It was somewhat foreseeable, therefore, that during the school year Michael would suffer an asthma attack.

.

As luck would have it, the assistant principal had searched lockers last Friday and had found an inhaler in Michaels locker. The inhaler was still in its original packaging, with Michaels name on it and complete instructions. The school promptly confiscated the inhaler.

.

So when Michael started to have an asthma attack, instead of going to his locker to get the inhaler, he went to the school nurse who promptly told him there was nothing she could do.

.

You read that correctly. Because of the school policy of not allowing the nurse to administer prescription drugs without a signed consent form from the parents of the student, Micheal was left to suffer in the nurses office while the school kept the inhaler locked away.

.

The school called Michaels mother Sue, to tell her her son was having an asthma attack.

.

She rushed to the office and was taken back to the nurses office by school administrators and they discovered the teen on the floor.

.

As soon as we opened up the door, we saw my son collapsing against the wall on the floor of the nurses office while she was standing in the window of the locked door looking down at my son, who was in full-blown asthma attack, Rudi said.

.

Michael Rudi said when he started to pass out from his attack, the nurse locked the door.

.

Think about this for a second. For whatever reason, the school doesnt have a signed permission slip to allow the kid to use an inhaler. The kid has a severe asthma but because the school doesnt have a piece of paper, they wont allow him to use the medicine a doctor has prescribed for him. The school calls his mother and instead of the school accepting the mothers word that the kid can use the inhaler, and signing the permission slip when she arrives at the school, the school waits and still wont let the kid use his inhaler. Then, instead of at least giving the kid emotional support, they lock him in a room where he is found by his mother lying on the floor.

.

Instead of even calling paramedics, they let this kid suffer to the point where he was in fear of his life because of a piece of paper with a signature.

.

These are the idiots in charge of the schools today.
