For thousands of tourists in the barrier islands off North Carolina, the
threat of Hurricane Irene has just cut their vacations short.

On Thursday, state officials ordered tourists to pack up the sand toys and
abandon the beach rentals. Residents have been asked to find a safe spot
farther inland as well.

Local news reports pegged the number of evacuees -- tourists as well as
residents -- at 200,000, although Ernie Seneca, a spokesman for North
Carolina Division of Emergency Management, said he was unable to confirm
it. It did not surprise him, however. Were at the height of tourist
season, he said.

(Reuters) - Hurricane Irene is likely to cause more insured losses in the
Bahamas than 1999's devastating Hurricane Floyd, catastrophe modeler AIR
Worldwide said on Thursday, even as the storm increasingly tracks toward a
weekend landfall in the greater New York City area.

Floyd was one of the strongest tropical cyclones on record when it hit the
Bahamas more than a decade ago, and it later prompted one of the largest
evacuations in U.S. history as well. AIR said Irene's path through the
Bahamas made greater damage than Floyd more likely.

Hurricane Irene is forecast to turn north into the U.S. on a path similar
to 1985s Hurricane Gloria, threatening as much as $13.9 billion in insured
losses and possibly forcing the evacuation of parts of New York City,
officials and forecasters said.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said a decision on evacuations would be made
tomorrow for residents in areas including Coney Island, Battery Park City
and parts of Staten Island.
.
Irene, a Category 3 major hurricane, is expected to grow larger as it
moves toward North Carolinas Outer Banks this weekend before crashing into
the Northeast as early as Aug. 28, according to the National Hurricane
Center track projection. The storm is 105 miles (169 kilometers)
east-northeast of Nassau, the Bahamas.

This track is eerily similar to Gloria, said Chris Hyde, a meteorologist
with MDA EarthSat Weather in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Millions are
potentially going to be losing power from North Carolina all the way up to
New England.

Irene may cause $13.9 billion in insured losses and $20 billion in overall
economic losses due to lost hours at work, power outages, interruption of
shipping and airline traffic, according to estimates by Kinetic Analysis
Corp.

Hurricane Irene continues to strengthen, and forecast storm tracks are
trending closer to the mid-Atlantic beaches. All signs for this storm
appear to be looking worse Thursday afternoon, instead of better.

Irene risksAdd to that the saturating rains we've been getting Thursday
from an unrelated line of thunderstorms, and we're being set up for
serious flooding once the real rain gets here with Irene this weekend.

AccuWeather.com forecasters say Irene has the potential to topple a great
many trees and power lines, damage roofs, siding and windows. High bridges
may be closed due to high winds. Air travel and high-profile vehicles will
be affected. Flooding, too, will close roads. The greatest cause of loss
of life in hurricanes is inland flooding.

The weather service says there is a 5 to 10 percent chance of a storm
surge in excess of 7 feet at Annapolis, and from Edgewood to Middle River.

Hurricane watches have been extended from the North Carolina-Virginia
state line to New Jersey and Hurricane warnings have been issued for the
coast of North Carolina, from Little River Inlet to the Virginia border.
This includes the Pamlico, Albemarle and Currituck sounds.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has authorized local officials to issue mandatory
evacuation orders in certain areas if they decide it's necessary as
Hurricane Irene continues on its path toward Virginia.
.
Though he left the decision to locals, McDonnell said in a statement that
he reserves the right to direct and compel evacuation from communities and
alter the timetable of retreat whether or not a local evacuation has been
ordered.
.
The governor said citizens who fail to comply with an evacuation order
could be charged with a misdemeanor.
.
Lane reversals on Interstate 64 to open more travel lanes still arent
planned, McDonnell added, but he said eastern Virginia residents in
low-lying areas should be ready to leave before the hurricane arrives.
.
Virginia Beach ordered a mandatory evacuation of Sandbridge because it may
be cut off from the mainland because of storm surge, large waves and
hurricane-force winds. The city asked that evacuations be complete by noon
Saturday and that people stay away until the storm has passed. The city
will open four shelters. Landstown High School and Salem High School will
open Friday at 6 p.m. and Cox High School and Birdneck Elementary School
will open at 8 a.m. Saturday. Pets are not permitted at the shelters.
