WHITE PLAINS The Westchester County chapter of Blacks in Law Enforcement,
which includes minority police officers from throughout the county, on
Monday called for County Executive Rob Astorino to create an independent
review board to look at complaints against officers.

The call, issued outside the Westchester County Courthouse in White
Plains, comes on the heels of news that a county grand jury filed no
indictments in the shooting death of Kenneth Chamberlain Sr.
.
Were here today to voice our outrage in the actions of the White Plains
Police Department and their officers and their lack of accountability,
said Damon Jones, head of the county chapter of Blacks in Law Enforcement.
Were here to say that enough is enough.

Jones called on Astorino, a Republican, to create a civilian review
commission to probe complaints against police departments across the
county.

Were putting this in the hands of Robert Astorino, Jones said. If Barack
Obama can put himself in Trayvon Martins familys position, where are our
elected officials feeling our pain?

To have black and Latino officers out here showing their support proves
that we are not anti-law enforcement, he said.

Chamberlains attorney, Randolph McLaughlin, also spoke with the newspaper,
talking specifically about the familys pursuit of a U.S. Justice
Department review of the case. McLaughlin expressed the familys desire for
such a review in a May 4 letter to U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

We are very hopeful that the Justice Department review of the use of the
N-word, especially, will result in a civil rights violation, McLaughlin
said, adding that he has not yet been contacted by the Justice Department,
but Im sure theyre doing their job.
