Chances are they're already landing in your mailbox: letters from your
friendly credit card company announcing "easier" payment terms and a new
look to your bill.
They're timed to Monday's sweeping changes in how credit card companies
can charge us for the privilege of using plastic.
Since Congress passed the federal Credit CARD Act last spring, the changes
have been rolling out in stages, with the biggest consumer protections
starting this week. They're aimed at curbing what the Federal Reserve
calls "unfair or deceptive" billing and marketing practices that have
helped contribute to consumer credit card debt.
The changes cover everything from when your bill can arrive in the mail to
how long "teaser rates" must last to when interest rates can be hiked. And
they clamp down on credit card offers to college students and consumers
younger than 21.
The new law is "very good news for consumers," ending "some of the more
egregious pricing and billing practices of the credit card industry," said
Ben Woolsey, spokesman for CreditCards.com, one of many Web sites that
compare consumer credit cards.
