With nowhere else to go, Haitians in Port-au-Prince slept overnight in the city streets, families huddling together in makeshift tents as loved ones remained buried under rubble, with rescue crews stretched thin and international aid still just trickling in from stockpiles at the airport.

While some people have been rescued from the ruins, hope is fading fast for many still trapped since Tuesday's earthquake.

There was some good news Friday just before sunset, as an Australian television crew helped pulled a 16-month-old child from wreckage after her screams could be heard from under her two-story collapsed home.

But many have not made it. Some estimates of the death toll have ranged well beyond 100,000, though reliable numbers have been hard to come by amid the confusion.

Haiti earthquake: President Preval says country like a war zone
Haiti's shell-shocked president thanked the world for its rush to aid his poor Caribbean nation after the catastrophic earthquake that he compared to a wartime bombardment.

Haitian President Rene Preval said: "The damage I have seen here can be compared to the damage you would see if the country was bombed for 15 days. It is like in a war."

The 7.0-magnitude earthquake that devastated much of the hilly coastal city on Tuesday also collapsed the elegant presidential palace and his own home.

Authorities in Haiti, already the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, are saying they believe the death toll will be between 100,000 and 200,000 and that three-quarters of the city will need to be rebuilt.

Preval, 66, a balding, greying figure, appeared like many of his countrymen stunned by the enormity of the catastrophe.

The 66-year-old leader told the Reuters news agency in an interview outside the police station that has become his home and office in the wrecked capital Port-au-Prince he hadn't slept for two days after the quake hit.

"I do not have a home, I do not have a telephone, this is my palace now," he said, smiling wryly and pointing to the headquarters of the judicial police where he is staying.
