Reporting from Port-au-Prince and Mexico City - Searchers in Haiti continued their hunt today for buried survivors five days after Tuesday's catastrophic earthquake, while hungry residents jostled for rations of water and food that were fitfully making their way into Port-au-Prince, the hard-hit capital.

Security "is a concern and we are going to have to address it and we are going to have to provide a safe and secure environment in order to be successful with our humanitarian assistance mission," U.S. Army Lt. Gen. P.K. Keen said during an interview this morning on CNN's "State of the Union With John King."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was on a flight to Port-au-Prince this morning to assess damage and discuss the organization's response to the quake, which by some early estimates had left more than 100,000 people dead and affected 3 million residents.

The 7.0 earthquake represents "one of the most serious crises in decades," Ban said before departing, according to the Associated Press. "The damage, destruction and loss of life are just overwhelming."

The earthquake, which hit the most densely populated corner of a deeply impoverished and troubled nation, has challenged the world's capacity to provide help quickly and effectively.

Despite an increasing flow of aid and U.S. troops, hundreds of thousands of residents were still waiting for food, water and medical attention. The influx of relief supplies and rescue workers has overwhelmed the Port-au-Prince airport, with one runway, and rubble-blocked roads have slowed delivery of supplies to neighborhoods in the greatest need.

Meanwhile, former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush vowed today that the fundraising effort they had been asked to lead by President Obama would be transparent and donations well-spent.

"We can assure them there will transparency and the money will be accounted for and then, more importantly, spent on programs that will be effective on the ground," Bush said on " Fox News Sunday."

President Obama asked Clinton, who is the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, and Bush to lead the drive to collect donations for relief and reconstruction. The two have a website: the ClintonBushHaitiFund.org.

Both former presidents have said Haiti's recovery will last well beyond the immediate humanitarian crisis.

"Our job is to remind people that there is still an ongoing need," Bush said. "That's part of the purpose of the fund, to say to the American people that rebuilding is a long-term project."
